EV-180 question

Hey guys,
I have an old Aqua C EV-180, without the ozone attachment. My mag 7 doesnt start up when there's a power outage, so my dad told me to get another one. I've noticed that my water doesn't heat up as high when it's not running. Would you guys suggest I try to replace the mag 7 with another one or should I get another pump that wouldn't draw as much heat but have the same volume output? Thanks

The best performing submersibles for that skimmer are the Mag9.5 and Eheim 1262. The problem is that if it is not tuned right (start off by drastically restricting the air intake) you could have a flood on your hands. The Eheim is a better quality pump and should run cooler and consume less electricity.

Simple 2-step process:

1) Place Aqua-C in nearest recycle/waste container
2) Go purchase a Euroreef protein skimmer

:D
nyuck, nyuck, nyuck!

I should have expected that answer from you Kevin.:D

heed Chef's advice.

I use a mag9.5 slightly restricted, with gate valve closed 1/4 and air about halfway.

nice consistent dark brown liquidy skimmate, about a cup every 1.5 days or so.

wipe clean reaction tube and collection cup once per month.

not with the eheim. I have a 1262 running externally for my return and I can't feel any heat from it at all. Cool to the touch.

what's so special with the eheim or the mag 9.5? When I look at marine depot's website, the Mag 7 and Rio 3100 are pacakaged with the EV-180. Any idea why these are good/bad choice?

i've been thinking of replacing my AquaC EV-240 with an MTC HSA-1000 my aquac doesn't remove enough for me and it winds up building up on the sides of the tubes and then eventually falls down again and gets redistributed throughout the tank....

The Mag 7 and Rio 3100 work but are not optimal for that skimmer. They are both very inexpensive which is a draw for many people. This is a simple case of getting what you pay for. If heat is a concern and a submersable pump is a must then here is a description of the most likely choices.
Eheim 1262 - optimal performance, quiet, low wattage, low heat, long pump life (probably will be the last pump you buy for this skimmer)
Mag 9.5 - optimal performance, decent pump life, reasonable cost
Rio 3100 - decent performance, poor pump life (ticking time bomb when used in a pressure application), dirt cheap!
Mag 7 - poor performance, decent pump life, reasonable cost

From your discription, The pump is too small or it is not being tuned properly. Are you using a Mag 12?

Something that Greg mentioned to me a while back was that some of the Rios are oil filled. If one of those cases cracks, there goes your tank...

On a side note, my Rio 2100 that I have in my oak barrel fountain/goldfish pond was running a bit light this morning, so I decided to check it out real quick before I came in to work.

Well, since my daughter seems to enjoy torturing the goldfish (by catching them in a cup and then letting them go again - and again), it would appear that the last time she did it (yesterday is my guess) she knocked off the outer cover of the filter. So, this morning I had to dislodge 2 carcases from the intake... And she thinks she's getting a hamster... Mmm, no.

Anyway, I have the 1262 on my 180 and it seems to work fine. I would plumb it outside but I want to keep the 90's and such at a minimum...

FWIW
