anyone running one? how is your skimmate? Mine gets very little in the collection cup but a lot of "paste" on the side of the lower chamber and a little skimmate in the collection cup. I clean it twice a week. Have the gate vavle 1/2" above the water and wide open running a mag 7 pump.

I dont run one but have you tried closing the gate valve a bit to raise the bubbles in the neck?

when I do that, I get very large bubbles but nothing pushing upward.

I run one. It performed the same as yours until I upgraded to a MAG9.5 instead of the recomended Mag 7. Now it pulls out 4-6 oz of black smelly grunge every day and I only have to clean the riser tube once a week.

did you put a ball valve on it to ristrict flow?

I have an EV-120 that skims nicely.

I was running a mag 5 on it. I used to adjust the gate valve so that the bubbles inside are just below the horizontal acrylic piece inside. Also, I used to think that it would generate the most bubbles with the air valve wide open, but I have determined that the valve needs to be closed some to get small bubbles.

BTW - it runs even better now that I have absolutely NO PUMP running it at all ( he he ).

Stu

how are you running it with no pump?

I think it is powered by a downflow return in the basement if I remember correctly.

I don't remember if I had the 120 or 180 but I think it was the 180. For me it had all to do with the correct water level that it was sitting in. Once I found the correct level, it was really happy.

murfman,

Misfit6669 is correct. THe skimmer is powered by 100% gravity.

The overflow from the display ( one floor above ) goes straight into the skimmer.

Stu

Stu,
You have two downflow returns one to the skimmer and one to the wet dry? The holes you drilled for the downflow returns both located behind the overflow box?

how did you calculate flow so you knew if you had enough flow vs having to ad a pump?

web104tv,

you kind of lost me with "You have two downflow returns one to the skimmer and one to the wet dry? The holes you drilled for the downflow returns both located behind the overflow box?"

I have dual mega-overflows in my 125 display. One goes straight to the skimmer. The other is split between my bubble tower ( which flows in the sump portion in the pic ) and the fuge area. The ratio can be controlled with the two ball valves in the pic.
The return pump is a sequence barracuda.

murfman,
I calculated that with 10 feet of drop, I could build up ~5 PSI of pressure, but I would need to 'back-up' the flow all the way up to the overflow to get this pressure. So I wasnt sure if I could get enough pressure & flow for it to work, but it worked fine. I even need to bypass some of the flow around the skimmer ( see the extra ball valve in pic ).

Stu ( sorry to hijack the thread )

I'm a little lost on how that works without a pump.
water goes down into the injector, but what is pulling water out of the skimmer to keep it all going?

I'm sure he has some type of return pump attached to the left side of the sump you see in the pic. Or that sump dumps into something else that has the return on it. Simple pressure from gravity is removing the water from the Skimmer.

Stu, I see what you are doing now. I forgot about the possibility of dual overflows. How many watts that big return pump costing you? Is that a fluval filter running beside your stuff?

Whoa! Time to update the gallery pics.

I sure wish it all looked like that now! Very clean looking....
not so much now.

The fluval & lifeguard filters were only on there for about a week to get the sump 'live' before I brought everything online.

A sequence barraucda with ~15 ft of head:

maybe 320 watts.

No ball valve. The flow is almost perfect with the gate valve wide open.

i am getting a 9.5 tomorrow. I have my GV full open right now and the flow is just at the bottom of the 1st chamber. I do have a T fitting on the GV that allows flow out both ends. I found that with just a 90* fitting it restricted the flow too much. I may have to remove the T as well but then I get all kinds of splash in the sump.
