Evaporation

I was wonder what evaporation rate you folks are having in between water changes. Found a low-profile 5 gallon that will fit under a stand, hoping this will be plenty for ato in between my water changes. And are there any plastics i should stay away from?

It depends on the size of your system.

I'd definitely set up an ATO to help keep your salinity stable. I lose several (many) gallons of water each day. I am not sure how many gallons I lose, but my RO system feeds my tank several times each day (over 3 hours in a 24 hour period). I have my RO system connected directly to an Avast ATO that then feeds through a Kalk Stirrer into my tank.

i think my 120 is doing about 2.5 gallons a day.. I do have cooling fans on it which increase that.. Just got my Tunze 3155 hooked up to my 5 gallon jug and im already looking to get a 15-20 gallon top off tank at least..

If you use new food safe plastics you should be safe. Large recycled food containers 5gal+ I have used after cleaning several times. Just make your last rinse with plenty of RO water. Depending on your tank size and house temperature number of fans and how cool you try to keep the tank, will vary your evaporation rates. I chill my 125 + 30G sump and still use about 1 gallon a day. I do have fans on the top that come on with the MH lights just because I know excess heat will be generated. This contributes to most of my water evaporation. I keep the house at 76 and the tank at 79 cool and 76 heat.

I was using an old salt bucket (looking for something better), and my 75g + 20g sump was using right around 1gal/ day freshwater.

Wow didnt realize evap. rates were so high. ATO seems to be a must otherwise you will be constantly adding water Dont think 5 gallons would be enough on a 100g DT 50g sump. Do most hook up straight to a ro unit as denfeig stated he does

My 150 gal uses 20g a week I have a 20g aquarium as a top off container. Look at sun west containers, I bet they will have what you need I stock if you get a bigger container. They are located just south of broadway and Campbell

On CL if you search "water barrel" there is a guy that posts about every 2 weeks that sells food grade from 5 gal to 55 gal and everything in between. Pretty cheap too, they just smell like Dr. Pepper for eternity, even after bleach. Haven't had any issues with phosphates or anything weird like that. I got two 15gal tall barrels for $15/ea. I dont use them for my ATO res though. My 55/29 only evaps around 5gal/week so I use a 5gal jug. HTH.

I saw a pallet of stuff get unloaded off the back of a truck today... Are you gonna do a build/set-up thread? I would like to see one. :)

Sun West Container has 5 and 15 gal containers for great price. Ask for a cat named Bob. Good guy.

1070 E Mill St ...near the 22nd St overpass (almost under it).

Cool ill check out sun west see if i can find something that will work thanks. Didnt think about it but i could do a build/set-up thread, it probably would be a good place to ask the million plus questions i will have being this is my first build. Just got my tank in so going to weld up a stand try to get some pics up after that

My 125 goes through 5 gallons every 6-7 days. The tank is in teh basement with LED lights and is also rimless. The evaporation will increase in teh winter signifigantly. Trick is to keep the tamk and room at the same temp to have too m uch evaporaitn.

On my 210gal I probably lose 2-3 gal a day and I use a 55 tank as my ato... It takes forever to need refilling lol
