Apparently they live on wave swept rocks in Hawaii. Can they live in an aquarium? I think they're so cool.

I have seen them for sale at Exotic Aquaruim in Sacramento CA, and I've collected them in HI. I read that they don't do well in typical aquariums as they live above the waterline at least part time. The one I kept went to the top corner above the water line and stayed there until it died. I tried to move it to the rocks and have several kinds of algae and nori it could have eaten, but as soon as it felt "safe" after being moved it went back to above the waterline. When I collected them, they were all above the water in wave beaten lava rocks.

Maybe they would do well if you had some live rock sticking up out of the top of the waterline? Any idea what they eat? Those are too cool!!

I can't remember what it was called, but we bought one of these a while ago, and he didn't make it very long in the tank.

now thats just to cool lol... it would be possible to keep them if u similated their enviroment..... ie have a tank that is half filled with rocks sticking out of the water and a very big powerhead to simulate the waves.... either way that is a REALLY cool urchin =)

I've seen them come into the LFS where I am and they were called impact urchins if it helps your ID :) I think they are just rock grazers and actually reef safe
