Experience with Firefish

I've read a lot of differing opinions on firefish lately. Some people insist that they must live in a tank without any other firefish because they can turn aggressive towards one another. Others claim they are harem fish and get along well in groups.

Personally, I have 4 firefish that stay in a closely knit group and have never seen any signs of aggression. Honestly, I cannot see how they can be aggressive at all, seeing that even my long nosed hawkfish occassionally picks on them. I was just curious about what experience other people have had with firefish.

Best if they are going to live together that they go in together. Adding another later may spell fight. We didn't follow that rule, but we have a purple and a red, and they're different enough that they merely snipe mildly for position, no wars. I find them a very agreeable fish, minding their own business and bothering no one.

Sometimes they'll go peacefully as a group. The majority of the time they'll start beating on each other. You many never actually witness it happen, but can notice the fins getting shorter, and then some of the fish ending up on the carpet.

Oh great...something to look forward to. Now that you mention it, I did notice one that had a bite taken out of his tail, but I figured it was either the Imperator, the wrasse, the butterfly, or even the hawk. I'm crossing my fingers that these guys are getting along. The angel can be quite the bully and the firefish seem to really enjoy hiding in his cavern. I'm not sure if they're using him for protection, or if they don't know any better.

What may start out as a peaceful aggregation of firefish will most likely turn into a single survivor. You may get a little longer with four since the aggression will be spread out. They are definitely jumpers so if you have an open tank, you WILL have a problem, it is simply a matter of when.

I've had a pair for about four months now, they are never apart and haven't shown any signs of aggression.
