experienced reefer loosing some tissue on acros, any idea?

Hey everyone.

Today when i got home and looked at my tank i noticed on 2 acros that have always done very well for me have lost a very small amount of tissue. The one is a large colony and lost a about a quarter inch of tissue on lower branch. the other is a Hiller Blueberry milli that lost a little bit of tissue in the middle of a branch that splits and other branches come out of it. Neither are loosing tissue from the tip.

i checked po4 with hanna egg and it is 0.00. Im using gfo and npx biopellets. Im thinking that maybe i should remove the gfo, or maybe cut it in half, but could this be the cause?

and another possible cause is my alk. I tested before i dosed and it was 6.1dkh(salifert) which is pretty low and I will slowly adjust to 8dkh. Normally my tank swings 1dkh throughout the day, 8dkh being the highest but i guess over the last couple weeks since i tested the tank has a higher demand and I will have to up the bionic.

I dose elos aa 7 drops 2-3x a week and 2ml pohls extra 2-3x a week

I must say, since starting with the bio pellets my acros and all my corals have been looking better then ever. if anyone has any idea please let me know

On a large acro colony it is not unusual to loose some tissue from the bottom as a colony grows and water flow changes around the coral. I have a 1200 gal SPS reef that I loose some tissue on some of the bottom branches.Your water parameters sound fine, I try to keep DKH between 7-8 but sometimes it slips a little lower. If the tissue recession stops I would not worry about it. I also have been dosing 21ml of vodka in my tank daily along with prodibio evey 2 weeks or so. It would be great to be able to say it never happens...but IME I have never went ven a year without something or multiple soemthings do some extent of die off on me. I think it is just the nature of the game when you start to get so many corals you couldnt begin to count them

as long as the instances are isolated.......adn they either stop on their own or you can get them to stop just keep on keeping on with stability. You will probably never know the "why" for sure. You can always usually think of little swings or occurences that happen here and there and blame them, but was that really the cause?? maybe...maybe not. Usually not IMO and most are pretty dang resilient. Its all a mystery

Last month i actually had to cut a couple large colonies up to save them from some stn I couldnt stop. They werein different tanks and everything else is looking great IMO and I see lots of good things going on everywhere. Why they did it I dont know and never will

IME, if you have 90% of your SPS corals happy your tank is likely just fine, particularily given the wide geographic range corals or collected from.

junz, im using tropic marine pro reef and when i do water changes i add reef actif to the salt so i guess technically you can say im using tropic marine bio actif.

ill keep and eye on my colonies and try to bump my alk to 7-8

Made me feel better and it not even my thread.

I currently havin the same issue with 2 wild pieces. They look healthy, growing and great coloration and have been in the tank for 4 months.

Makes me feel better knowing it expected to some degree.

When I ran in to the same situation, I just frag a piece of the coral just to make sure that if the colony doesn't make it, I still have the species in my system for the most part at least.

Tropic salt has a low alk, it is to be used with calcium reactors fwiw. Bump your alk up slowly every day until you hit your target.
