Any BAD experiences with a Blue Throat Trigger? If so, what was the problem? Ate corals, shrimps, crabs, snails, small fish? Details.

Any GOOD experiences with a Blue Throat Trigger? If so, was it in a reef with shrimp, crabs, snails, small fish? Details.

In both cases, could you provide the following:

1. BAD or GOOD experience?
2. How big is it?
3. How long have you had it?
4. What size tank was it in?
5. What were / are the tankmates?
6. What are you feeding it?

Thanks.

cliff notes: you should be fine, one of the safer and more peaceful triggers out there, even with inverts.

I had 2 in my reef very docile fish.Never bothered inverts corals or other fish.I also had a pink tail witch was very docile. The fish ranged from 2 1/2"to 4"

no I have seen a large niger trigger in a 400 gal it was 9" and it was very docile.I just bought one today to cycle my tank its small. My LFS had a 6" pink tail in his reef tank.He used to pet the fish.

go for the niger instead. Just as reef safe, more beautiful(IMO) and you will actually see him most of the time.

Ive had both and the niger is a much cooler fish IME My niger will eat out of my hand. The bluethroat would run and hide if i approached the tank. They may not all be that way but that was my experience

A blue-throat is the safest as far as not having to worry about it trying to eat inverts... but they are easily scared, and one buddy of mine (Thorium/Josh Kostera, reatured tank on Euro-reef.com as well) has a pair in his 125g. He notes that when scared, they like to wedge themselves in the rocks to hide, as triggerfish do. And this behavior can lead to massive rockslides on a regular basis. So be sure your rock is well secured.

flyyyguy - I really like the Nigers, too. Not to mention they are cheaper and uually smaller. But the potential to snap and become terrors scared me too much.

This is the ony one ive had but hes great. Like i said he will eat oujt of my hand, never harasses any inverts, and even shares the veggie clip with a rabbitfish and a tang.

This one even eats bryopsis. I lost all of my sps this summer and had a little outbreak of bryopsis. He wont pick it off the rocks but will eat it if I pick it off the rocks and hand it to him. :)

I know of two other people with nigers in full blown reefs and they have nothing but good things to say as well

Here's the little guy I picked up. He's about 3.5" long and eatting Frozen Mysis, Brine and a little Prime Reef flake. He is shy, but no more than my Foxface was. But, this was expected. I figure it will take a few weeks to a month before he's used to me and comes out more. The Foxface died about a month ago and will be replaced with the Blue Throat.

Nice let me no how he does with ur shrimps, clams, crabs, sanils, and corals cause i may be adding one to my 90

I was under the impression both of these triggers were too small for a 90gal. I wanted one, but did not. Was I wrong in doing so?

the only bad experience i had was when i woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom came back into thebedroom and must have scared the bluethrought because he launched right out of the tank but luckily i heard a thud so i started looking around the tank only to see him flopping around on the floor, i put him back in the tank and he is fine.other than that i love him so much personality and doesnt bother any shrimp, corals, snails, crabs or small fish but i wouldnt think he would be safe with clams. good luck

I had one for a short time, five minutes in the main tank to be exact. He felt that my in Carpet Anemone hiding behind the rocks was a good place to hide. We thought he was hiding until that damn caprpet expelled the bones two days later.

scotmc - I think you mean too big for a 90. Some say yes, some say no. I have read that a 4' is the minimum, so I figure I'll try it.

reeferaddiction - Are they known for jumping? He almost jumped out of the bucket when I was dripping him. So, I put an eggcrate over the QT tank. I do have a 6" rim around my display, so hopefully he'll stay in.
