Expired Sand

Hello Marine Depot,

I purchased a 20lb bag and 10lb bag of "Live Sand" and the 10lb bag says best if used by "Feb 2009", last month.

Can I get a newer bag sent to me to replace this one?
I don't want to purchase expired live sand...when I bought it for that very reason.

Thanks.

Hello,

Thanks for your post, I apologize for the inconvenience. If you could please provide me with an order number so I can further look in to the situation and get a replacement sent to you.

Best Regards,

Walter

The Arag-Alive 10lb bag was expired.
The Ocean Direct, I thought too, was supposed to have water in the bag, others I've seen does, mine didn't?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your patience, I greatly appreciate it. I contacted Judd over at CaribSea regarding the expired bag of sand and your other concern with the Ocean Direct.

He explained to me that the reason they place the expiration date on the bags was because of the decline of the amount of bacterial spores over time, he did mention to me that the spores in the bag will have a 2-3 year lifespan after the expiration date, once the sand is used in a reef type system the bacterial spores will quickly multiply even if the bag has been expired.

Regarding the Ocean direct sand, Judd did say that these bags will arrive like that, it is all a matter of packaging. The bag itself is made of a breathable material that will allow the bacteria to live and breathe in only a moist environment, the bags are never filled with water, this would cause a sulfur smell once the bag is opened for use. This particular type of sand is packed moist at the plant.

I hope this information is helpful, I will also send you a PM

Best Regards,

Walter
