Extending an existing stand

I'm currently planning on swapping out my Display Tanks after the holidays. Currently, my tank is a 60 x 30 x 18, and have already ordered a slightly larger tank at 66 x 30 x 20 with an external overflow. I'm trying to simplify the swap; mainly cause it'll **** my wife off if the swap takes more than a day.

the question I have is would it be possible to add 1 4x4 on each side (actual dimension 3.5 x 3.5) and the corresponding vertical support? It goes without saying that the trim and plywood along the top would also be replaced. If it is possible, is it worth the effort?

4 x 4s would not be a good idea. They are the most unstable of dimensioned lumber. They split, crack, and twist as they dry. I was in the process of agreeing with your plan till I reread your post and saw it was 4 x 4 not 2 x 4.... doubled 2 x 4 would be a far better plan, but stabilzing it will be a bit of a problem. But honestly, replacing the stand would probably be best overall. Personally, I would build a plywood box, rather than going to the trouble of building another lumber stand...it will be less work than modifying the existing stand. Next best would be to replace both the top and bottom rims of the stand, with the corresponding members longer by the required 6".

I do suggest a 40-48" tall stand, it's soo nice to work under, but I'm tall so the taller tanks are easier to look into for me..
