Extension Tubes

The canon 25 extension tube would be great for macros right? Just curious on something like moon shots also. It really wouldn't effect that, right?

What would you use for that to bring it in closer? Or just crop?

I've seen some really good shots of the moon on here and I just tried one and it is cool to try but not the quality others are getting.

I guess I was shooting hand held through a dirty window since it is so cold outside.

Maybe tripod + outdoors + summer = better?

Unless you are on the surface of the moon, extension tubes will not have any (positive) effect on photographs of it. They may negatively effect the photograph, as you will loose a stop of light.

Every lens has a point where it just can't focus if you get any closer. Extension tubes allow you to get even closer than the lenses origional limit. If you don't actually get closer to the subject than you possibly could without the tube, you get no benefit from it.

Now an extender will help you photograph the moon from earth. If you have a 600mm lens, a 2x extender would effectively create a 1200mm lens, or 2x the zoom. A 1.5x extender will loose 1 stop of light. A 2x extender will loose 2 stops of light.

LOL! What a visual! While dead-on accurate, this just hilarious. I'm visualizing an astronaut laying on his belly, face down in the moon dust with a camera. Thanks for the laugh.

Ha ha. Well maybe some day I can afford a zoom lens. :)

First priorites as of now:
Flash
wide angle (either 17-40L or 17-55f2.8 tamron)

I was just playing with BHphoto's cart. With the 5DII + kit lens / extension tube / flash / wide angle 17-40L.... Wow @ that price.

I only can imagine...
