External Overflow box placement

I presently have a new tank with internal overflow and would like to make it an external overflow. I have read some of Roger's comment and indicated that placement in center overflow is best if you have a wavebox. I have a wavebox and would like to make the overflow on the side of the tank. Would this dramatically effect the affect of the wavebox?

You lose some wave energy as the wave spills into the overflow. In the center the wave stays constant in height so you don't have the surge and loss of energy. Basically the wave will be shorter and the overflow will be noisier.
