external pump

dadyo21 ... Is that the pump that came w/ that big honker of a skimmer? ... If so then there is a way to quiet it down significantly ...let me know ...

I have a mr2 skimmer new never used, had it for two years, i have the gen-x that came with the skimmer combo but need something to get the water back into the tank from the sump, i was thinking external to help keep the temp down. i am also looking for a over flow.

Doc what size is your panworld????

What size tank do you have. are you doing fish only ,LPS or SPS. IMO as a return I would do around 5-10 the size of your tank giving your skimmer time to take out more gunk. Then if you are doing sps place as much flow inside your tank as possible.
My 2c to help decide what pump to go with.

i have a 55gal but want to up grade to a 120 or 180 but thats next year. i currently have mixed reef with sps and lps, my tank is not drilled or reef ready.

I have a panworld 100pxx on my 180 reef. IMO way too much flow for a return on its own, I have mine feeding my chiller wich is pumped out side the house and it is also feeding my 30w UV, plus I turn it down with a ball valve about 25% to reduce the flow even more. In all a great pump. For you 55 you could go with a Ehiem 1250/60 for external/inturnal pump, when you upgrade you can use it to feed a fuge.

It dosen't make any differance how many returns you place in your tank if they are coming from the same pump. IMO you want the ratio of water going throught your sump low so that your skimmer takes out more stuff out of the water. The water flow inside your tank can be as much as 20-30 times the water volume. As of now I have around 6500 gph inside the 180 and I would like to add more at a layer date to hit dead spots. Doc's69s pump is a great deal with around 1100 gph and it is also presure rated, so you can turn down the flow without affecting the pump also @ $125 that,s half the price of what you can get it new and you you would be set for your 180. I have a brand new never used overflow that I bought and didn't set up $35 if you are interested. I think there are some guy's out there wich might have old ones for free if they want to chime in.
