External skimmer on shelf?

Currently running a 100 gallon seaclear system II moderately stocked FOWLR with no sump (just an overflow into the rear of the tank). My current HOB skimmer is not cutting it and I was looking at upgrading to a Deltec or ATB HOB.

Now I am wondering the feasability of running a bigger external skimmer on a shelf to the side of the tank. Is this possible? I assume I would need a pump from my overflow to feed the water to the skimmer and then gravity back to the tank.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

you are correct, you would need a pump to feed the skimmer. however my concern would be small leaks onto the shelf. i would recommend placing it in a tub or bucket of sorts so when (not if :D ) it leaks it wont ruin anything

I would just make it easy and go with the ATB hob. I have one and its great! a little noisier then i'd prefer but all skimmers are. BTW ive owned two of the deltec mce600's and the ATB is superior by far IMO.
