fairies arn't good shippers. They are not terrible, but they aren't the best. Supermales of any kind are poor shippers. the key is VERY BIG BAGS. If you ship a 4" male, ship it in a 10-12" bag. I ship all my flame fairies in 8" bags or bigger depending on shipping time and current conditions. However, im about to ship a 4" super flame male and hes going in a 12" bag.. no messing around there :)
If you do get the shipped, ask what size bags they put them in. I always prefer atleast 2.5 - 3 times that of the size of the fairy. aka 2 inch fairy shipped in atleast a 7".. but that is pushing it.

IME female flames ship ALOT better then males. I brought a pair home on the plane with me (total bag time was around 16 hours)
when i got home they didn't look so good... the male wrapped himself in his mucus and was breathing heavy. I did a long acclimation and put them in. lights off for atleast a whole day. The 2nd day, they both came out and ate frozen mysis :) Strong ever since!
 
wow--aside from larger bags....how would you recommend a scotts fairy wrasse to be prepared for packaging and sent?

Volivier, from what I've heard a six line wrasse is a fairy wrasses worst nightmare, the 6-line will "terrorize" them constantly making it very hard for them to adjust to your tank since they are fairly shy fish to begin with.

I just bought the sixline last week because I read they were necessary for sucessful clam keeping....maybe I could catch it....LOL

a 10" bag would be perfect for the usual size those fairies are found. You could get away with 8" if the trip is short. But 10" to be safe. Keep the temp stable and lots of O2 in the bag :)

I believe that temp is the biggest factor. When i brought mine home the temperature in the plane dropped to high 60's which was to cold. I think thats the reason why they were in rough shape (plus it was 40 degrees outside :))

Not necessary, I hae three Giant clams with no 6-Line wrassse. You may be thinking of dealing with parasitic snails. A 6 line will do wonders if you end up with parasitic snails, but if you don't have them (or quarintine your clam and deal with them there) then they aren't necessary to keep clams.

Can I keep 3 Carpenters Fairy Wrasses in a 340g tank? Thinking about getting these guys:

Yes, you can definitely keep 3 carpenters in a 340G. As a matter of fact you can probably keep 15-20 different fairy wrasses in a tank that big.

The second wrasse picture on your post is that of a Mystery Wrasse or otherwise know as a Five-Bar wrasse. Comes from the same family as the sixline and really dosen't get any bigger than 4 inches. You can add this guy to a tank that has fairy wrasses with caution. They can be pugnacious. If you do want to add him I'd suggest you purchase him as young a specimen as possible and/or possibly have him be the very last fish you introduce in your tank.
 
I definitely want to collect wrasses but maybe I'll start in earnest later in the year as my tank is still young and I'm still refining my QT proceedures. The Carpenters are cheap though and I was thinking about getting a harem. If I do, how many is a good number and would they hang out together in the tank?

well, my six line is MIA so I guess that is good. When I buy from LFS should I request largest bag to bring home in? What should I look for, a buyers beware or smart buyer idea for the fairy wrasses?
 
Look for healthy colorful specimens with no sign of disease. It is also preferable that they have no nose irritation (usually white) because they go psycho in the bags they are transported in and rip up their nose, which can lead to infection. If they have that I'd probably put it on hold for a while to make sure it doesnt develop into an infection. Make sure the wrasse is aware of your presense. I'm pretty sure it is okay if they are laying on the bottom, because wrasses are known to do that, just make sure it reacts to you when you're near the tank.
 
any fairy wrasse can be brought home in a 7-8" bag - if it ins't a supermale. I would say 3" and under you be fine in a 7-8" bag for a trip of max 2 hours. When you ship (or recieve shipping) you should bag them big. I just shipped a 4" flame male (supermale) in a 12" bag... I think it was perfect size. :) the female was in a 8". She was only a max of 2" and females ship better then males.

I'm not crazy about Fairies lying on the bottom. I rarely see mine laying around and the only time I can remember any laying was my Solerinsis chillin in a thorny oysture shell. Wish I had been faster with the camera for that shot.

I like to see the fairy wrasse mooving around. Doesn't matter if its hiding behind a rock I want to see it moving.
Also don't like to see them bobbing at the surface, like they don't like the water.
 
I agree Thurge, I don't like ones laying around unless right as I approach the tank they are swimming around and don't stop until a while after I walk away. Before I bought my Solarnesis it was laying on the ground, so I put it on hold, and in about 3 days he was swimming around constantly and eating like a pig.
 
don't know anything about these wrasses, where could I find a picture of them? My LFS is getting these in.

Good evening everyone. My tank has now been up for about 62 days. I have 2 clowns only so far and want to have a mixed reef with softies the 2 clowns and the rest a Fairy Wrasse collection.

I want to stay on the medium side of the bio load. What would be the most colorful choice of Fairy Wrasses to get and how many can I get and still stay on the medium side of the bio load?
