Bronco,

how rare are the Pyle's wrasse?? I never see them, and i can't find a ballpark price anywhere online... i thought they went for like 300 a piece?

Thanks!

I have a question, I have two medium sized wrasses in 75g now with a 150lbs of rock.

Could I add the Aussie scotts Wrasse to the tank that is double the size of the other two?

Or should I wait until I get my 180g up in two months or so and just keep him in the QT tank?

finally got a decent pic of my carpenter...

A very nice picture, but it is not Carpenter's, but Yellowfin Flasher (= Paracheilinus flavianalis).

Three very similar species are shown here; carpenteri/ flavianalis/ mccoskeri (from top to bottom).

Filaments; 2-4 in carpenteri/ 1-4 in flavianalis/ 1 in mccoskeri

Anal fin; red & yellow in carpenteri and mccoskeri/ entirely yellow in flavianalis

Some black areas in carpenteri (in dorsal and caudal fins).

awesome info! thank you very much for the id.

several pages back there was some question regarding the proper id of these fish.

now i can let the local fish store know what it is...they have them regularly.

A little update from me on my female Solor. She is doing very very good. I'm feeding her enriched frozen brine and mysis once or twice a day, and she is eating like a pig. She acclimated fairly quickly and once again is doing great. Now for some questions. I may have the opportunity to get her a mate tomorrow. However i was also conisdering getting a pair of flames. Would 4 fairys in a 46 gallon bowfront be over croweded? I was also planning on a dawrf angel, pair of clowns, and possibly a bali tiger jawfish. So would this be over croweded? If i got the male Solor tomorrow, and ordered the flame pair on monday would i have problems with the males fighting? Thanks for the help, and i will try to get updated pics of my female when i get a chance. She's afraid of the camera so it will be a bit of work. Thanks again.

Cory

seems a little crowded. You could do the 4 fairies, but the angel and clowns is pushing it. I would pick the pair of flames over the clownfish anyday :) I love my flame pair!

H. Tanaka

do you have any pics of the Paracheiliunus rubricaudatus??
its on my australian list, but i can't find any pics of it or the retail cost/ anything for that matter. lol

Thanks!

zemuron,

Paracheilinus rubricaudalis is the recently described member.

Yes, I have attached two photos in my column,

"Let Them Flash", on page 4.

I have kept four specimens (all males) from Vanuatu. It is called the Red-tailed Flasher Wrasse that was originally described with Fiji specimens. Now it is known only from Fiji and Vanuatu. It is similar to P. mccoskeri from the Indian Ocean, and is slightly larger than it.

Similar spp.

Here is a new comer from Kenya.

Top; C. species, male, 7cm from Kenya that seems close to C. rubriventralis (shown in center). It is rarely seen in market and I sent specimens to Dr. Allen for his examination to decide if it is valid. I call it the Gold-tail Fairy Wrasse.

Bottom: C. joanallenae, males from Sumatra; photo by Scott W. Michael. It is also rarely seen in the aquarium trade. Did anybody keep it until now ?

1 is fairly cheap for a Kenyan specimen, being some $40-60,-.

2 is very cheap, some $15,-

3 one of my friends informed me that it has been shipped from Sumatra but the import was prior to the Tsumani disaster in Aceh Province, northern Sumatra. It cost some 30,-, I hear but now it is not shown in any price list. It has two distinct color morphs; one is shown here and another has a broad, longitudinal yellow band on side. I really want this species for photographing in home !

Flashing Red-margined

Flashing Red-margined

I for the first time got my Red-margined Fairy's displaying !
It is 12 cm long male from Vanuatu. Top depicts its usual coloration, and the bottom its displaying one. It exhibited this coloration again and again for a while this evening.

This is a male of Cirrhilabrus condei, 7cm. The same specimen, from Vanuatu, photographed on the same day.

zemuron,

Pyles are a bit hard to come by. It's not impossible, like say me trying to find a bloodstain fairy but it will take some paitience and research.

These fish are a deep water species and are hard to collect. Usually when they show up, they show up in small waves. In other words, a distributor gets a batch from a fish collector and it's then distributed various rare fish stores.

I've obtained all my pyle's fairy wrasses from Marineaquatics.net. They do not have any now but they do a good job of hunting them down through their sources when they get serious requests for them. I've also seen them on Liveaquaria & Marinecenter.

Try those routes. If I hear of any place that has one I'll let you know.
