blface,

Are you sure it's a katherine's? They get confused with other fairy wrasses. Inmany cases they are mistaken for Temmincki fairies and or Balteatus & Punctatus.

Yes PM with the location. I'll find out if I can.
I don't have personal pictures of a Katherine, but there are some out there on the web.

Oh yeah! Now I can be part of this thread!!!!

I was able to finally take a pic of my wrasses. Got them about 3 weeks ago, and they don't even bother each other. I guess I lucked out.

I forgot what this one was already

I did need to catch and remove my sixline wrasse, since he started showing aggression to the solar. He now resides in a sump full of LR and GSP :D

Thanks ...I'll try that. I find the behavior of fish a very fascinating subject. For instance...no one would ever think of keeping 2 or 3 scott's with a couple females in a 20 gallon tank, or large tangs etc. But when they are kept like that in quarantine for 2-4 weeks there is no problem between them. Then a person adds them to a large (180) tank...and they are fighting within hours. Any thoughts on why this happens?

They became established. I Acclimate10-30 scotts in the same 50 gallon tote and they do not fight, but when i add only 2 males to a 55 tank in the system one will always have nipped fins and i will see the more dominant one chasing the other. once they feel comfortable, its a whole different story.

I understand what your saying...but it's still pretty weird sometimes. Like I quarantined my exquisite and whipfin together for 2 weeks. Neither one bothered the other at all. They swam together and ate together. They were I'd say feeling pretty comfortable in the twenty. Then I put them in the 180 and within a few short hours the whipfin is really chasing the exquisite. And it goes on for 4 days. (then I removed him) Why then...why not in the 20 during their 2 weeks together? Same with a couple tangs I did hypo on. A atlantic blue about 5" and a purple 5"...went in a 40 for 5 1/2 weeks. Never any sort of scrapping at all. Then add them both at the sametime to a 180...and within a few days...fighting. I don't know, but I just think it's strange.
With the tangs I think its like the quarantine tanks are too small for them to actually stake out a territory, but the larger tanks seem to give them that opportunity and then they do.

They don't fight in QT tanks for many reasons:

1/ They are usually very stressed out when they arrive
2/ Everything about a QT is artificial.....usually bare bottom tanks, no natural decor or enviroment. PVC tubes instead of rocks and corals. They can't recognize anything they know so they can't even begin to establish the concept of territory.
3/ small QT tanks keep them uneasy becuase they feel very vulnerable to you....the big giant that keeps sticking his hand in the tank
4/ If you are medicating them or if they are ill in the smallest of ways they don't show natural behavior

Once they are released in a large tank that looks like their natural habitat now they can settle in, set up territory and then defend that piece against what they consider intruders. They won't remember that they slept next to that fish for two weeks in a QT. At that point it's just someone barging into their house.

If someone physically took you from your neighborhood and placed you out in the middle of nowhere (like a desert ) in a square plain box....you probably wouldn't be yourself. However if someone trespassed into your house or broke in....you'd probably take a baseball bat to their head.

That's kinda the way it is with fish.

Hmmm I see what your saying, and it makes total sense...but I have to say that in my case I have my quarantine tanks set up totally real. Gravel rubble, lots of live rock etc. These fish are usually within several days approaching the glass when I go near it looking for food. I like to feed them small amounts several times per day so they get friendly and comfortable with me quickly. So I'm still a little miffed.

Well, I still haven't gotten very good pix of my two newest tank members, but here's a couple of pix I was able to snap. I apologize for the poor quality, but atleast you get to see my new Laboutei and Exquisite fairy's.

It wasn't a Temmincki or a Punctatus for sure but it could be a Balteatus. Will have to wait for wrasseguy2 to chime in on his id. I hope he had a chance to to see it & purchase it. I hope my id was correct. I've studied Kuiters booka million times I would hope some of the info. would stick. They did have it labeled as a Katherine.

blface i did check that fish out and i think it is a katherines also...but i passed on it...looked really good...i have 2 fairys that are close to that color and so i am not going to get it...but thanks on that heads up..

No problem wrasseguy2. I was just trying to help out a fellow local wrasse lover. The price seemed really cheap for such a rare find.

i got a few more wrasses today...i got a c. laboutei, what i think is a c. cyanopleura..juv. and one that i think might be a juv. temmmincki and a p. filamentosus...i wil post some pics in the next day or so..but all are in qt doing good so far.

here is a pic of the fish that i think might be a temmncki..not sure but i bought it as an ast. fairy for $25 so can't really go wrong with that..H. Tanaka maybe i could get your thoughts on an id for this guy..

Have to pass

Have to pass

I am bummed. I ordered a Scott's Fairy Wrasse from my LFS awhile ago. I then had some things come up and told my guy that I have to wait until the spring, if it comes in. I visited today and there he was. 4-5 inches, a bit dull in color but he just got in two days ago and seemed active, although I did not see him eat. This is the first SFW I have seen at my LFS in over a year-if ever. The owner wasn't it, but I assume it's the one I requested. I can not take it. Just my luck. Someone, please talk me into it-just kidding.

Another hard luck story. Keep the good ones coming.

my lfs was not for sure...it was in a tank with like 7 of these in there for $25 a piece....i looked in the rudie kuiter book and it is almost a dead on match to the juv. of the true temmncki..i will try to get a better pic but there is another line that is kinda yellow in color that goes along the upper part of him...still whatever it may be for 25 thats not a bad deal

Bronco7777: Thanks again for your acclimation process. I know have a beautiful and healthy Rhomboid. The fish was in great shape and was easily accepted by my Lineatus and Labouti. I’m still waiting on the Pink Margin and Scotts-Cooks Is. I’m working on pictures.

Also, I wanted to say thanks to Gal at Reef Tank Supply for his great personal service!

Not sure if anyone is asking, but the SFW I have to pass on looks to be Australian. Predominately blue. I'll confirm with LFS. Still bumming.
