Fallow Period - Fish very stressed in Q-Tine

Hi All,

So, I have successfully completed the transfer method for treatment of ich. The fish are now in the holding tank while the DT runs fallow. As of tomorrow the DT has been fallow for 31 days.

I don't think my fish are going to make it to 70 days. It's not even half way through yet.

I know its a weighted risk, but should I cut the fallow period short?

Thoughts and suggestions please.

Cutting back on the fallow period could re-introduce the Ich back to all the fish and your efforts will have been for nothing. Tell us more about your situation. How many fish in what size quarantine tank? Do you have lots of hiding places? Are you doing regular water changes? What kind of filtration are you using?

Thanks guys.

Tank is 36x18x18.
Canister filter (not fully mature though).
Fish - 4" hippo tang and 3x2.5-3" yellow tangs.
Plenty of PVC fittings for cover.

The 3 yellows swim around together, no fighting, but their colours are very pale. The hippo hides all the time, again very pale colours. But they feed vigorously (even though I keep feeding to a minimum) - the hippo comes out quickly when there's food about.

Really, it's just a gut feel that these guys are seriously unhappy and stressed. There is no external stressor - they are in a quiet room.

You're anthropomorphizing your fish :) Don't worry, as long as water quality is kept up, they are feeding well, and they aren't killing each other, they'll be fine IME/O.

SOOOOO not worth the risk of having to do this all over again!

Peter

Thanks - there's something reassuring about the big long word "anthropomorphising" :-) ...... like you've been here before.... So I'll keep the faith and stay the course.

Thanks all.

LOL. I had to google that word...

As stated above, stay the course. Your fish will be fine. What happened in the DT to infect it in the first place? Reason for my question is to make sure your fish are ridded of ich while we wait out the fallow period. No reason to throw an ich infected fish into a clean tank, right?

Best of luck, Man. Keep us posted...

It happened because of my impatience, introducing an unquarantined fish. Now paying the price as are my poor fish. Thanks.

Well, at least you are honest. LOL...

If your current fish need treatment, now is a good time. It'll give you a distraction as you ride out the rest of your fallow period...

+1 So long as they don't stop eating and ammonia stays 0, you're good. Are you feeding the tangs nori? That might help with the stress and discoloration.

I had to house a PBT and large Maroon clown in a small plastic container one time for months. The tang would hide most of the day and when she did come out, she would just swim in circles. But we all got thru it, and they are both still with me today.

Thanks for the overwhelming support and encouragement guys. I feel much better.

Nori - no. I am afraid that lots of of will disintegrate and end up in the filter causing an ammonia spike.

Yeah, and you're not dealing with wussy fish. They can stand a little less than perfect accommodations.
