fallow periods - not what you think they are

First of all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that is what i am giving here in this post. Having said that, this is my opinion on the "72" day fallow period everyone keeps throwing around here...don't bother with it, just a waste of time. Again, my 2 cents.

This has now been my 2nd fallow attempt to rid my tank of whatever is causing me issues and it has failed again. Here's the details:

Last fish was removed from DT on 4/28

on 5/20 I acquired 2 fish from a local reefer that were in his DT for 5+ years with no issues and I have seen these fish several times over time and have verified this. They are both tangs and I put them in my QT on 5/20. The QT was bleached and sterilized and re-cycled.

Both were treated with prazi (2 rounds) and CP for 21 days and did very well. One of the tangs (chevron) developed some kind of anchor worm issue 2 weeks after the CP treatment which came and went every few days. As of last week i have placed him in another friend's QT tank to see how he does and he is doing a lot better. The other tang, a thompson's tang has never displayed any issue whatsoever and has been clean since the day i got him, so in the DT he went on 8/29.

So my DT has been fallow for 4 months with nothing added to it and this fish has been in QT for 3 months+ with a clean bill of health. Now 1 week later after adding him to the DT, he has what appears to be ich...white dots on him...not covered by any means...but he does have them. Aside from seeing this on him...he still acts normally and eats great and does not flash or scratch or do anything like that but this is aggravating to say the least :sad2:....I don't care what anyone tells me anymore...fallow periods are a waste of time, period. Would like to see someone explain this to me.

Given that you don't care what anyone says, providing assistance or input would be a waste of time. Good luck!

When I had ich , I also did the above and disease was back following a 12week fallow period. Nuked the tank and started from scratch.

If you gave me an achiles for free, I wouldnt take it if my QT isnt ready. Not worth the headache.

maybe it's not ich? my hippo tang gets a dot or two a couple times a year, but i don't think it is ich, the dots look to large. he has done this for 3 years. all my fish have been through qt!

My $0.02 - I didn't have success treating for Crypto until I started doing TTM. Since going fallow and running all fish through TTM, I've not seen Crypto return in more than a year and a half.

My point exactly, the fallow period did nothing and that's what i am trying to say. It would have been a better use of my time to start over then waiting for 4 months just to see the same thing again.

I don't know what it is, it just looks like ich to me. Maybe its even sand on them but what do i know right?

I did use TTM my first time around when i went fallow. I will probably get feedback that i didn't execute it properly but it is what it is, i know i did it right.

I was only stating that regarding fallow periods, but thanks for your comment anyways. Actually you are correct, it seems that good luck is what is needed in this hobby. I know what my options are going forward, was just trying to state my opinion on fallow periods and maybe help save someone else some time if they are considering doing this.

I can't tell you what you did wrong, as I wasn't there. All I can state is that TTM works for me, and the results bear it out. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

yeah. theres obviously more to ich than what we currently know. if we knew everything and tested a zillion times, then 50% of the community would not be running into the same scenario 12 week later.

Thats why people can charge $95 for a yellow tang when others sell for $20. By the time you invested in medication, seperate tank, saltmix, electricity, you paid more than $20 for the yellow tang.
