Family Size Clownfishes and Mixing

Reef Sponger

In Memoriam
I started a 75g BTA tank and has been up and running for quite for at least 5 months now. Just looking to stock the tank with clownfishes now. Anyone have any experience with putting in a entire family of clownfishes? If so, how many would be safe to keep together? I was thinking of Rod's Onyxs and maybe True Perculas and Oscellaris. Has anyone mixed these together?

if you start out with juvies and add them to the tank at the same time you could mix any of the percula and ocellaris(varieties) together.

nothing is definite.

i agree with ben.

You are correct in that it is not definite. However, I am not a gambling man, so that tells me to err on the side of caution more than jump in and take the chance. I don't like to take chances with living organisms, honestly. I would rather take the conservative route and have everything thrive.

they seem to do fine at first then every few months one clown gets killed until there are two

Embryonx how is your tank full of percs doing? no agggression? remember they are all juvies still.

they are not all juvs. up are incorrect gsm.

i have never lost a clown due to aggression. my thoughts are from my own exp. not from just what i read or what others say.

not all juvies sorry for mispeaking and of course you can take a fish out. but just showing everybody a tank full of clowns and then not discussing theory and practice on how you keep aggression down is not that helpfull.

from the video i saw of your tank the clowns were not of of breeding size most were small and the B/w occ. were the largest. am i wrong? i dont want to fight i just want you to share more about how it all works and why you can do it,, but others who try have failed. and what happens when those fish are bigger? is it a long term solution for you?

you are incorrect again gsm.

reef sponger good luck with your clowns.

i would love to hear how and why it works, is that too much to ask?

you seem eager to tell me im wrong which is fine, but im not the only person who feels that way. You have the ability to share personal experience that could really help. why keep it secret?

Yes, they do have a rather benign, huddling behavior at first, sure. It gets ugly as they age, though. I have observed this in tanks that housed dozens of young ones. As they age, we must separate them or they will (in most cases that I have seen) begin to kill eachother.

Its important to remember here that while one person gets away with the extreme, doesn't mean that the next 100 or so people will under the same conditions.

I still don't agree with it, and would not attempt it.

I called Rod's Reef and he said it could be done. He agrees with this theory as long as they are all juvies and put in at the same time. He recommended an odd number of 5 total for a 75g and recommended a good skimmer on the tank. He didn't recommend mixing breeds except perculas and ocellaris should work.
