Fans and cooling

The new lights on my setup seem to make things a bit warmer than before. I modified the hood last night to add a couple of louvers for ventilation. Seemed to keep the heat down really well...

The fans on the hood move a bunch of air. Sort of noisy though. Who makes the most quiet fans?

And would they even be necessary if the temp doesn't swing higher than about 84 for awhile? The temp in the basement stays the most stable of any room in the house.

Thermaltakes are 76 cfm at 21 db. That's the most air and noise level I found when looking. I have 4 of them blowing in the canopy and the hot air blows out the back. I found others that get up to about 100 cfm but they are usually about 35-40 db.

I really like my Ice Caps. I mounted them in a box and insulated them with orings on the mounting bolts and put a thin peice of rubber, almost like an innertube rubber, between the mount and the hood. Unless they are running full speed you can't hear them at all and on high they are not really noticable. You can come over
and check them out if you want before you buy.

White and clear acrylic left-overs from the rest of the hood. I really believe using little orings on each side of the fan bolts has made more differnce than anything keeping them quiet.

I guess maybe these are moving quite a bit of air. At least it feels that way, so that makes them more than a little audible. Think they are just some 3 inch fans from radioshack.

Howard, I used to have Radio shack 4 inch fans. they moved a lot of air and were noisey but again, and this is when I found it, get some little orings and insulate them from the hood. You can still hear the "whoosh" noise but it helped quiet it down a lot. It could be worth a try for .36 cents worth of rings. The other thing I found is that the radio shack fans rusted and the bearings started making noise after about one year, I went thru several. My icecaps are still like new after 2 years so I've already saved money and they are quieter.

Oh I agree 100 percent! This is just what the hood had installed when I got the setup. Doesn't seem to put out that much heat to begin with, after I installed the louvered vents in the top.

But I will be getting some of the IceCaps most likely.
