Favia problem!

I've got a couple new favia's in and I'm having a problem with them. They have this white muccus type film over parts of the coral heads. It's eating away the tissue. Being an SPS guy I have no idea what to do!

Here's some pictures.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Taco, looks to me like it could be what is commonly referrerd to as brown jelly disease. It is a infection of some sort, protozoan in nature if I am correct... IME, it is highly contagous to other LPS.

I have seen a coral recover from it, but only with agressive fraging away of the infected part of the colony.

With a favia like that I would be tempted to remove the coral from the tank, take tooth brush and remove as much of the affected area as possible. When you place the coral back in the tank increase the flow around it. If that doesn't work you will want to cut off the affected area. Keep an eye on it this stuff spread fast!

Good Luck!

Looks like I know what i'm doing tonight after work.. *sigh*

Thanks for the help Porky.

Would something like a Lugol's or Iodine dip help?

You're welcome brother :smokin:
I do not have any experience with Loguls nor have I done an Iodine dip. I think I have read that it is a protzoan so I imagine it could not hurt...

Hey taco,

The toothbrush method described by porky can be followed by a Lugols dip, or you can apply it directly to the border of healthy and necrotic tissue.

Also, just like porky said, make sure it's getting good flow after this.
