Well, that kind of ID is way over my head...

I dont really have any other photos of use.. the one I pasted was the best one.. That was a pic on the first day I got it (over 2 years ago). Here is a wider shot from that same day: http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/60-xmas-favia.jpg

Here is one showing it a couple months ago, however, and you can see how dense the mouths became since when I first got it.. http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/a13-right-side.jpg

Shortly afterw that last pic something afflicted my tank, and I lost 1/2 of my SPS, and my LPS began to receed.. not sure what it was, but I think I have slowed down some of it... needless to say, I lost about 1/2 of this favia.. very sad as it's my favorite.

Deff. not a cyphastrea in my personal/professional opinion based on the colony pics! From the whole colony shots it appears to be a favia of some sort

Anyone care to id?

Need a close pic, but I'm guessing Favites on this one.
I take a few days off & you guys go nuts! LOL.
Nice to see plenty of Favia/Favid Eye candy left..

Very nice everyone. I just recently started getting into the favia's.

I have another all green one that I need to take a picture of. Seeing this thread I now want to go out and buy more favia's. They are sweet!!!

I guess that is all the favias there are. Kev must be on vacation. Local fish store getting ready for a big coral sale. I hope I can score one Favia. They already have a Platygyra again..

Yours are pretty darn good, Steve. Don't forget your friends come fragging day! LOL.

Matthew

Lol, never do Matt.

Not to beat a dead horse, but, Dont go Kong! :D
I do believe it is a favia, possibly montastrea. Favia is almost a relative term, I would also venture to say for as many favia that have been posted there are equal posts which are not favia's at all, but on the outside are virtually identical.

An ez way to ID a cyphastrea is just by sheer size, I could be wrong but the mouths on your piece probably range from a dime to nickle sizes? Where on a cyphastrea you could probably fit 4-5 mouths within the circumference of a dime.

Needless to say, Im hooked! Gorgeous colonies and pieces everyone:D I'll be posting my 2 humble frags soon.

Well, there are quite a few Favites here as well as Favia, but like you say, they are pretty close. Just remember, Favia the corallites are always seperate & disticnt.
No matter, beautiful corals all. Just a few more days..

..... Just remember, Favia the corallites are always seperate & disticnt......

That is a general rule to follow, but not a definitive rule when deciding specie but rather a feature that can collaboratively help along with other physicalities. For example look at Favites bestae:
http://www2.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/701-800/Species pages/750.htm

Visually the tissue looks like it's seperated and indeed the skeleton has individual corallite walls.

Or the Favia rotundata
http://www2.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/101-200/Species pages/167.htm
or even a better example, Favia rotumana:
http://www2.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/101-200/Species pages/156.htm
where some morphs look like both favites and favia and even the skeleton is fairly inconspicuous. Hard stuff to figure out especially when you include variants that effect there physicality like light and moreso, flow.
