Hello, I have a favities(sp?) brian and I was wondering how much light do these things need?

They do well under flourescents or metal halide IME.I think you'll find feeding is more important than lighting with many LPS corals.

I have a piece just like that and have never fed it, have upped the calcium in the tank though. Is target feeding that important with them? And what do you feed?

I got a favites a few days ago and it enjoys eating very much. I feed cyclop-eeze and mysis shrimp. It's tentacles go crazy.

I also have 120 watts of pc lighting in a 24 gallon aquapod. It's about half way up and appears to be doing well, but may benefit from moving down a little.

I feed the whole tank cyclo-peeze but never target feed. See the tentacles on lobo go nuts but not on favite. Thought the just needed light and calcium

You don't have to target feed if your broadcast feeding your tank. There are some LPS corals i like to target feed but with all the tentacles on a Faviid colony, they are sure to capture some from the water column if your broadcast feeding.Another thing, alkalinty in the form of carbonate/bicarbonate is the limiting factor in calcification in stoney corals. Many reefkeepers are so concerned monitoring there calcium levels when calcium is nearly supersaturatd in seawater as it is.I've had excellent growth iwith stoney corals with calcium levels as low as 350ppm although 420ppm is what i would recommend with an alk of 9dKH.

it looks like an oyster. does it ever open or close? i have some dead ones on some live rock in the tank now. i use to have these piece that had 4 that were living. i never feed them, but they always seemed to do well.
