there is an assortment of algae out there. what is your favorite?

*seagrasses are included in this thread samala ;)*

for me, i'd have to say the green gracilaria. the color tends to change w/ the lighting intensity

Ooooohhhh.. :D I like the fluorescence patterns various algaes show.. like the orange from Halymenia or the green/blue from some Dictyota. I dunno, that Distromium specimen someone posted a little while ago was probably my favorite algae so far. So pretty with its little rosettes and greenish flourescent edges. Better than some coral I've seen.

Seagrasses.. I would go with Halophila spinulosa as the all time fave for 'grass species - fern seagrass.

Caulerpa...definantly Caulerpa.

What kind of Caulerpa is your fav?

I'm a big fan of the feathers (C. mexicana), but... the grape (C. racemosa) is quickly growing on me... and in my tank. Hopefully will end up with some C. peltata again as that's a nice variation as well.

I have to catch myself though... I have always thought of 'green' in the tank as being macro's... and therefore what I wanted.

Soon I'll have some Seagrass and I'm expecting that I'll move that direction and lessen the macro's.

I wish H. spinulosa was available in the US! Its' native to NE Australia, Philippines, Singapore apparently. Definitely occurring in areas where people already collect reef fish, so its possible that one day a little bit will find its way to the states. Though, of course, I would push heavily for just a tiny bit of starter material that is then aquacultured to shuffle it around the hobby, instead of importing lots of the plants. For now we have to appease ourselves with the two Halophila's, one Halodule, one Thalassia and single Syringodium.

Oh.. and about eighty different varieties of macro at last count were circulating 'round reef circles. :)

heres a pic of my new red gracilaria

the "other" red gracilaria

the first one grows in a dense bunch and doesn't fade or lose color due to lack of nutrients/light
the second one is real picky... loses color/breaks up really easy and is the one everybody has for sale.
heres a better pic of the second red gracilaria

hehehe :)
I will ship you some when it grows out again. I just gave it to 7 people so I don't have much any more.

I know this is an old thread, but I love pictures so keep them coming.
This is clearly my favorite although I actually don't know what kind it is, it grow like a bush has a nice red/orange color in daylight and when my HQI turns off and only my blue LED's are on the algae turns fluorescent red.
Unfortunately my photographic skills aren't great but might give you an idea:

The algae came by it self, growing out from a rock *lucky me* :D
