Feather Duster?

Ok i am a complete idiot and tried to move my feather duster. Well he must of attached himself to the rock and well the tube came out but he didn't, but i didn't pull it out hard but real gentle thinking he was coming out with the tube. My question is will he eventually grow another tube or is he done? As of right now the only fish i have in there is a green manadrine and i dont think he will bother the duster. Thanks in advance.

Did the entire tube come out or just the front part? Either way they can rapidly rebuild their tubes as long as they get enough of the right size particles. Normally they attach their tubes to a rock or deep in the sand. They rapidly retract down into the bottom whenever a big predator (like you) comes around to bother them.

Thanks so much thats a huge relief. The entire tube came out. Also what do you mean by as long as they get enough of the right size particles.

Leslie: How can I make a feather duster stay where I want it?
It moves around all the time and I can't see it.

I should have asked this first - is the tube calcareous or leathery? The hard ones are made by feather dusters in the family Serpulidae and they secrete the tube. The leathery ones are made by species in the family Sabellidae. Serpulids actually secrete the calcium for their tubes while sabellids use particles of silt or sand mixed with mucus to form their's. Sabellids are selective. They can only handle particles in certain size ranges. The particles that are edible they eat; inedible ones in the right size range are used to build the tube; those in the wrong size range are discarded. If you haven't thrown away the tube take a good look at it with a magnifying glass.

Aliie -- Is yours always moving to different places or to the same place each time? usually if a soft-tube feather duster moves it's looking for better water flow and light conditions. Some are sensitive to light levels as well. To make it stay where you want it to you'll probably need to make changes in your tank.

Moves to the same place everytime. I put it next to the other one but it won't stay. Oh well, I'll let him be I supose!

I did the same thing but didn't pull the tube completely off. It rebuilt it's tube break in a few weeks.

Darkblue: Let us know what you find. Hope your worm makes it!!
