feather dusters killing zoos?

Can tiny feather dusters kill zoos?
It looks like the reason my four Keds reds arnt opening is that there are feather dusters growing out between them, Can I kill the feather dusters by putting the zoos in fresh water?

The feather dusters wont kill the zoos but they will irritate and stress the corals out which in turn will probably kill the zoos... I would simply cut the feather dusters at the base and remove them... The only other way to do it is remove the zoos from the rock..

If there are too many they will irritate the zoanthus so they won't open and won't thrive. I have found them easy to thin out with tweezers.

the small feather dusters are probably not feather dusters, they are probably hydroids and they will kill zoas.

i pull them off w/ tweezers outside of the tank running under the facuet. they release spores that will spread so make sure to run them under water real well as you remove them. many people are unsuccessful removing them as they are real hard to get rid of. this is just tried due to desperation it seemed to work and i saved the colony.

Also i'd cut off the piece that has that is most infested and isolate the hydroids when removing.

fresh water

fresh water

Will fresh water kill them, I cant seem to get deep enough to get them out of the middel of the zoos and the zoos are getting pretty small now I think they are goners

A fresh water dip of one -two minutes may help. Get the temp right and dechlorinate.

tweezers not working

tweezers not working

Ok I tried to tweez them out and all I did was get them closer to the zoos. I think there inside the rock. Is there some thing that eats tiny feather dusters?
I looked up hydros and they dont look like them, they look like tiny little grey feather dusters.
Im going to try a good fresh water soaking tomarrow. My reds have vanished and my yellows are on there way out. It looks like all the zoos in my tank have them growing out of them, this could be bad, Or it could mean more room for sps's:)

I'm actually having the same exact problem. I have a cluster of Zoa's with one very small and annoying featherduster right in the middle.

I am one step away from trying to tweeze them but any other help would be great!

Maybe its nudies. Check close when you have them out of the tank for the fresh water dip. Check out anything that falls off durning the fresh water dip.

WILL a freshwater dip kill or hurt the Zoa's?

Last time I did a dip my frag didn't fare so well. How long do I dip them exactly?

I'm sorry to kinda coattail on this thread........my problem is the exact same. It's definitely a feather duster. I can see the base attached to a branch of the zoa's. I've just never tweezed them off so I don't know what to do.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

I had the same problem but it ended up to be nudies. Sneaky little bas@%@%. What I did was float a bag of dechlorinized water to bring it up to tank temp. I took out all of my zoo frags and dipped in individual bags for about 1 minute. After the minute I pick it up and shake it upside down for about 20 or 30 seconds. Then I check the bottom of the frag for eggs and the bottom of the bag for any baddies that might have fallen off. I dipped twice a week for three weeks. Make sure you manually remove the eggs as the dip will not kill them. I have had no problem for 5 months. Frags have doubled in size and I have fraged them twice. Still got rid of feather dusters to.

I'm gonna try to tweeze of the feather duster before i do a full freshwater dip.

What is the best way to it? I remove it from the tank first?

How far to the base to I trim? What can I expect when I do trim it?

Thanks for all the help so far.

mega dip

mega dip

Well I left the whole rock zoos and all in the sink for 20 minutes. The zoos are starting to open now and not a feather duster in sight.

I have dipped zoanthus in dechlorinated fresh water at tank water temprature without harming the. You may also wan't to grab the tube with a pair of tweezers and pluck them like an eyebrow.

UPDATE: I did a freshwater dip for about 2-3 minutes......during this time I also plucked 2 pesky featherdusters that were right in the middle of the patch. The tweezers worked like a charm.

I just put the Zoa's back in the tank and it looks like they are opening up slowly. Too early to tell. Definitely no nudibranches though.

Thanks for all your help. Any other advice?

At this point, patience is important. It may take several days or even a week for the zoanthus to fully open after the freshwater dip.Just let them sit where they are and wait a bit.
