Fedex problem with order

I agree, i would order from you but i've had to many bad experiences with fedex....they always damage everything! They are terrible in IN. The postal service is 10x better! And there just mediocre.

luke33,

We understand your concerns regarding shipping. As mentioned before we would be happy to ship any supply orders via USPS or UPS. Currently we only offer FedEx for our live shipments. If you have concerns with mishandling of packages in your area, you could choose to pick your package up at your nearest FedEx holding station. Hopefully this will alleviate the concern with live stock being mishandled. Please also keep in mind that we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee with all our shipments. If you receive an order that has been damaged or you have any concerns with the live specimens you received, we will gladly offer a resolution. If you have any other questions regarding shipping, please contact our LiveAquaria Department at 1-800-334-3699.

Sincerely,

Gwen S.

dfs/la2, have you or yours talked to Fedex specifically about the needs of the careful handling of the live orders so they make it to their destination safely and alive? Has this been specifically stated to the carrier instead of just being implied from time to time? What is their understanding specifically about the issue of live shipments? It seems that most often the carriers don't give a hoot about whether or not a box says "FRAGILE LIVE SHIPMENT" or not. What say you?

Freed, I also think it depends on the driver too. (I know you are talking about the whole system too) I am lucky that the drivers that I've had actually pay attention. A couple of weeks ago when the driver came
to my door he was sweating (and it was about 32* out), so I asked him why. He stated that he noticed that it was a live shipment, so he made sure the heat was on so that the package would stay warm.

I have never had any complaint with DFS, the one problem I had was handled as quickly as the original problem in this post. They replaced the damaged goods when they found out about the problem with no extra money spent by me.

As for FedEX, I hate to say they are a huge company as are all the overnight shippers and sometimes things go wrong. I wish I never had to ship live animals this way, but our hobby requires it. Mistakes and deaths will happen, if it is not acceptable, don't order animals by mail nor buy from those who do.

I am curious on why shippers are considering not allowing shipment of live animals? It is my understanding they do not cover losses as it is. Not shipping live animals would be a death blow to our hobby. How can hobbiest like us help make sure this never happens?

The best way to avoid this is to support companies that do this type of shipping and have the values that sustain our hobby. I.E. support Drs. Foster and Smith and Live Aquaria. The more sales they receive the more money they make to leverage their will in politico circles and in distributors/collectors to use sustainable and humane collection techniques. This also allows them to leverage their business with shippers for better shipping and better shipping techniques. The more money their shippers make the more they are willing to accommodate those sources.

We all win this way, I guess it's voting with dollars. I get kick *** fish, and we get a sustainable hobby.

Titansfan,
The bulk of the pressure will be applied by animal extremists groups. This has already happened with dogs and cats. I fully support measures to ensure safety and humane treatment of all animals including fish and coral, but it must be within reason. As the costs increase, the profits decrease and the viability to comply with regulations and public sentiment becomes less appealing for the shippers. In other words, it is not worth their efforts.
There will also be pressure on the local fish stores to keep livestock in quality conditions. Naturally they should, but my opinion is that at some point the USDA or other organizations will police the stores.
These types of political issues should be the focus of all in the community of handling livestock. What is lacking is such an organization of community. AMDA is and will continue to be a failure since it creates a division within the industry.
I do not have the answer but I do not like the idea government intervention or shipper despair. I guess if AMDA or another organization cannot come to the forefront then we will have to settle for the alternatives.
I do not think that there is imminent worry but the stoppage of shipping has been discussed.
As a first step I would join your local Reef Club and support MASNA. This helps create a unified voice for the hobbyist. MASNA is outstanding in my opinion. Support Reef Central as well, they are a great community.
I will be your voice on the political side as I have contacts within FedEX, the AVMA and the Center for Zoonotic diseases. I am also licensed by the USDA in the area of the interstate transfer of animals. I am a member of the AVMA. Additionally, I am licensed by the Drug Enforcement Agency in Narcotics. Not sure how that will help but it shows credibility. Nothing concrete here but I can provide an educated and rational opinion for those agencies willing to listen.
There is no need to panic as a hobby but better to be proactive than reactive.

Thanks, Race Foster, D.V.M.

Azial,
I did not want to be self serving and say that--- but you are correct. The ideas that I mentioned in my post are useful as well. It will take all of us to lead the hobby in the correct direction.

Thank you, Race

We ship between 50,000 ( in slow periods) and 80,000 packages per week and believe me, we pay attention to all costs including damages, lost packages and nondeliveries. We are paying out well over $300,000.00 per week to FedEx and other shippers.

300,000*52=15,600,000, plus christmas.

My point is that I would think fed-ex would want to keep shipping live products and support it politically. I realize that it's not all live products, but a company that spends that much on shipping could do a little persausion.

Thankyou to F&S and everyone who purchases from them so they can help us.
