Feedback on tank/sump setup? (Video) 29g tank/10g sump

I intend on putting a protein skimmer in the first chamber. In the last chamber there is an Aqueon 1700 submersible pump and the drain is 1". The return 'u-tube' has a predrilled hole to break the siphon upon loss of power. I've unplugged the pump several times and the siphon breaks almost immediately.
