Feeding a six-line wrasse???

Keeping it Simple
Hey guys I just bought a six-line wrasse a day ago and the parameters are all great. Everythings doing wonderful in the tank. The only problem is he's kinda shy around me and I can't really get him to eat the flakes I have. (left over stuff) I just bought some brine shrimp to entice him to eat. Do you think this will do the trick?? Also, are flame scallops hard to keep?

Thanks for the help.

Thumbs up!

Shy at first

Shy at first

My six line was extremely shy at first.....stayed hidden in the rockwork for probably the first month.

After a while he settled into the community (clownfish, firefish, and gramma) and stays out all the time now. He is also the most aggressive eater at feeding time.

Just be patient and give him some time to settle in.

I bought a six line last weekend, and have not had a problem getting him to eat or come out. I started with frozen mysis when it was in the bag still, I didn't expect it to eat flake yet. However when feeding my mydis blenny omega one super veggie flakes, the six line immediatly started going for it. At first it would only take the small pieces but I've seen it taking the large pieces now.

my six line was hiding at first maybe for the first month or two , i even thought that it was going to die because I never saw him eating, but now he is a smart one that goes to the top and get a few pellets and dives to get the leftovers, you wrasse will be ok

I agree, he'll figure it out - mine was shy for a week or so, but now he's a bold little piggy at feeding time. He's the smallest fish in the tank and has NO trouble competing with his agressive tankmates for food.

My 6-line took a few days to be bold, but he eventually ate outside of his hiding places. And from all my reading, flame scallops are extremely difficult to keep for a long period of time. It's better to not to purchase them.

My 6-line is going to have to go see Jenny Craig....

I feed mine a mixture of Kent Zooplex with some Cyclopeeze and frozen brine added. He pigs out!

He was a little shy for maybe a day or two, now he is out as long as the lights are on!

Has anyone had a six-line prey on clams or perhaps polyps? I was interested in getting one myself, but I am affraid of it getting to my corals/clams.

I do not currently have any clams, but a lot of Zoas, Shrooms, LPS, Softies, etc. and absolutely no problems with mine.

Wuld a 10 gal be too small? I know wrasses are fast movers, I would hate to cram the poor little guy into a shoe box sized aquarium. I was told at my local LFS that because they are carnivores, they will go after anything they can, but in the same store, I saw them being kept with a wide variety of inverst. Go figure. We shoudl take a poll on this matter. I am anxious to see everyone's response/experience with this fish.

a ten gal would be absolute minimum, and about the flame scallops, they are beautiful, and cheap, but they are very hard to keep, they need spot feeding, and friendly neighbors, and if someone gets them sngry, they will absolutely terrorize your rockwork.
About you SLW, he'll be fine, just give him a few weeks, i think by a month, he'll probably came out, ivew had about three up till about now, and they came out within the first week, could have just been my tanks inhabitants though.

Six line wrasse

Six line wrasse

I agree with the general consensus of the forum, the six line wrasse is a robust eater, and is anything but shy once settled. My only problems with the fish begun when he would feed on ornamentaal shrimp when they would go through their molt. Also I found them to be very dangerous when it comes to feather dusters they would gobble them up. I had one desimate my christmas tree worms. Other than that they were a pleasant addition, and infact would at times remove parasites from tangs and pygmy angels. AVOID the flame scallops unless your willing to direct feed DT PHYTO plankton directlly to the critters, and in an nano reef setting that can be impractical.

i personally think a 10 gallon is too small for a 6line. they are very active, but skittish fish. they do get to be about 4" also, so it would outgrow the tank. i'd say 20 gallon MINIMUM, but 30 would be ideal. of course, as it grows, 20 will become too small.

that's odd that your 6line would go after your shrimp, usually they don't do that.

generally when you first get a fish like a 6line, flake isn't going to entice it. they are a carnivore, primarily, so if you're trying to feed them a veggie/meat mix flake, they might not go for it.

Thanks alot for the info. guys that puts my mind at ease alot! One thing though, I made a cardinal mistake. I bought the scallop without reading first, so he's already in the tank. He's pretty calm and I do spot feed with dt's phyto. Is this enough and could spot feeding mess up the phosphate levels in my 30 gal? Again thanks for the help; it is much appreciated!

I have a clam and various SPS/LPS/softies, and I haven't seen him try to eat of them. I feed mine flake and cyclopeeze, and sometimes mysis shrimp and brine shrimp.

My roomate has one in his tank for years and has not had a problem. He feeds Cyclopeez, DT Phyto, and Kent Phytomax Pro. The scallop is healthy and growing fast. Good cheap addition if you have the time for spot feedings!

Also, I think the SLW might NOT be for me, I have a few feather dusters and I crustaceans, I don't know how willing I am to sacrifice them for a fish. Who knows, maybe I will joing SLW club too.

I have a couple colonies of small feather duster worms currently in my tank and have not seen my SLW take any nips.

I had a large Hawaiian Feather as well, he died, but nothing the SLW caused...

Like all fish, temperment can be different even if it is the same breed!

it's rare they will go after crustaceans, from what i've read.

also they are known jumpers if stressed. watch out for that if you move your rock around, or add a new fish.

Mine is a pig! I have seen it cruising around with a small brittle star in its mouth. They do alot of picking at the live rock, so don't worry about it starving.....Jim Z.
