I've heard the same thing many times, that smaller clams need to be bowl fed, but I've had results to the contrary. About 3 months ago, I added a 2" Derasa to my 55g tank (with 452 watts of PC lighting), never bowl fed or anything, and he's added about an inch of new shell since. My squamosa was a little larger when I purchased him about a month before that, and he too has added some shell.
I am by no means an expert on clams, or anything, but I've extensively studied, researched, and read up on clams, and I completely agree with the statements above, that the clams are getting nutrition in the form of nitrates and phosphates.
Now I've yet to try it (and most likely will not) and I'm not suggesting it, but I've read somewhere that some clam owners urinate in their tanks, to give their clams nutrition.
