Feeding baby Maxima

Hi all:

I just got a couple of small maxima clams. They said at the LFS that I should feed them phytoplankton with a turkey baster.

I tried it last night. The clam repeatedly opened and closed when I was doing it -- is this normal?

How often should I feed them / how much?

Try putting them into a small container and pouring some phyto in. You'll know when they're done because the water will be clear

Many will say that target feeding is not necessary, that it's just as effective to feed the tank entirely, and easier, too.

Here is a thread that I started on 2004 about the baby max, I just fed the tank. It's too stressfull to take the clam out for bowl feeding it IMO. I still have the clam. Good luck with your little one.

the clam opening and closing is a coughing/choking response

my clams do that too, it looks like its choking if you get too much phyto in there at once. i just put the phyto in a high flow area and the clams do fine, plus you feed everything else as well

Many believe they are "puking"/ spitting up when they are doing this.. They are actually losing thier food!!!

It is possible to choke a clam to its death by spot feeding.
Excellent lighting is more important.
I feed clams and coral phyto everyday--I produce my own(very cheap to do this) and add a half a cup daily to my tank and refugium to feed the copopods.

I got a baby maxima a couple months ago from a LFS. I never spot fed it at all. It has grown really well. I think it has increased in size by a quarter of it's original size. Happy little thing. I have tried the bowl feeding method and the spot feeding, not much success.

they are amazing filter feeders on their own---I gave up feeding my along time ago---they get the phyto they need from the water column but rely on the light the most

I'm the same way as capn H, I feed my display tank and fuge daily with home grown phyto and both my clams are happy
