Feeding Clams

I was under the impression that as long as they are not babies (2" and under), that they did not have to be fed. I don't feed my max or squamosa anything.

Agreed with john76, but if you do target feed them, it's easiest to make a 'feeding hat' from a coke bottle. Some will take them out of the tank and put them in a small container with tank water and add DT's to that.

DT's Live Phytoplankton is the best. I feed the whole tank DT 1-2 times a week.

Clams under 4" require phytoplankton (preferably live). No need to spot feed as they constantly filter tank water, so adding to the tank should be sufficient.

IMO

I have 10 clams and the smallest one is 2.5". I don't really feed my clams anything and 2 Croceas have put on 2+ new rings in 3 months. All my clams, including the small one are putting on new shell especially in the past 5 or so weeks (probably finally settled down in my tank when I bought them back in December).

If this counts, I only feed them Kent PhytoPlex once a week or less. It's hardly a full meal and I don't even use full dosage. When the bottle runs out, that's it.

From reading around, feeding is not required for anything 2.5"+ clams of course with excellent lighting. To be safe, I would go 3".

However, I do have a 2.5" and it's putting on shell with basically no feedings. If I don't count those once a week or less feedings. I doubt Kent Phyo is helping at all. I'm just going to use it until the bottle runs out.

Yep, you're getting contrasting answers. I dunno what's going on. Not really feeding is working for me and I'm not about to change anything since my clams are very healthy and growing!

BTW, I haven't changed the water in 3 months to boot! Well, my tank does not have a lot of bioload but see my sig for more tank info. I just dose limewater. Everything in my tank is growing except for the Acro SPS. The Monti Digita frags (sp?) grow about 1cm per month. Not exactly fast (even when the water was pratically brand new 3 months ago), but growing consistently nonetheless. :-)

I believe it really depends on the size. I've never had a clam under 2", so I don't know if it is vital to feed them - but that's what others say. The larger/older ones pretty much live on their zoox. from the light.

I believe the larger clams will be (at the risk of sounding anthropomorphic) 'happier' if phyto is added to the tank, but I don't believe it's necessary to sustain them.

I feed DT's b/c I think it's generally good for the entire tank - clams, corals, pods, etc. I also like it b/c it is live - I'm not adding dead stuff to my tank.

Maybe routine algae glass scraping helps too?

I read that exact thing somewhere on here. Can't remember where though.

I think it was a comment in his forum, but I don't remember. What he actually said is that he feeds phyto heavily, and when he notices algae on the glass, he stops adding phyto and just scraps the glass.

Question: Is phyto the algea that grows on the glass? I have some very fine green stuff that grows on my glass and it comes off very easily...

Phytoplankton is single celled (generally speaking). Somehow I doubt what you scrape off the glass will be of similar size, even if you scrape daily. Be careful not to clog the clams gills.
