feeding clams..??

I have started to add live phyto to my tank to help feed my clams.. figured it couldnt hurt... I was wondering how many times a week do people normally feed there tank and for how long..?? I dont spot feed, but I turn off my return pump, add the phyto and then let it sit for a while with all the powerheads and lights running... whats a good amount of time to wait before turning the return pump back on..??

I have a 4-5" derasa and a 2-3" crocea... I have a 25 gallon display tank... Thanks in advance everyone...

turning off the pump for a few hours is fine, feeding 2x per week shoudl be sufficient and you feeding anything else other than phyto?

phyto is the only food besides fish food that is added to the tank... anything else I should be adding..?? Thanks again

have you tried cyclops? or marine snow or any other fine powdered liquid fodds?

I havent tried those... I'll have to go check them out. I've only used the live phyto that I have to keep in the fridge... That stuff is only good for about 2-3 weeks after I buy it... does the marine snow or cyclops expire..??

i am sure marine snow has an experation date, but is a lot longer than 3 weeks, and teh cyclops is frozen copepods.

So should I be feeding a mixture of all three or is one better than the other..??

I have two clams. I used to feed DTs for about a month and then I ran out and never bought anymore. I no longer feed that, and it has been I would say 6 months without feeding my clams.

I did however get a free sample of coral frenzy about three months ago and tried that. I got a really good feeding response out of a lot of my other corals. I now feed coral frenzy, not on a regular basis mind you. My clams are doing really well.

if you feed your fish and have strong light there should be plenty of dissolved nutrients in the water for your clam. if you want to add a little something extra just for the clam then just add a little bit of phyto right to the tank a few times a week. pumps on or off and skimmer on or off doesnt really make a difference. clams filter tiny bits at a time slowly all day long so leaving the pump or skimmer off for a 1/2 hour or an hour isnt going to make a bit of difference in the amount of particulate the clam will capture.

the stuff you can buy called marine snow is 99% water 1% detritus. dont waste your money, most people try to remove detritus from there tank. why pay top $ for it and dump it in your tank.

cyclopeeze is a large copepod in the 200 to 300 micron size range. the ideal particle size for feeding clams is between 2 and 50 microns. cyclopeeze is too large for clams

I used to use DT's a while back (2 years ago). Now I don't feed my clam anything, and haven't for the past year-and-a-half.

There doesn't seem to be any adverse effects from my not feeding the clam, but is this a dangerous practice while keeping clams? Should I actually be feeding my clam?

if you have strong light and dissolved nutrients in the water the clams will be fine

I use reef nutrition Phyto-Feast and Roti-Feast. Great products, very easy to use, last about 4 months in the fridge and IMO at about $35 for both its well worth it.
