feeding clams

Is it a good idea to place a small(2 1/2 inch) maxima clam that is attached to a small piece of live rock in a container to feed it dt's phyto?
I did this yesterday left the container floating in the tank to keep the temperature stable put enough dt's to give the water a green tint and left it for an hour occasionally blowing the water around with a turkey baster . The water ended up having sump green clumps in it I guess waste the clam produced then I just dumped the water back in the tank the clam looked happy . I never did this before when I used to have clams I would just dump the phyto in the tank . I figure this way you use less phyto the clam gets more phyto and you add less nutrients in the tank.

clams do not need supplemental feeding as long as they are receiving strong light and there are nutrients available in the water ( feeding your fish etc.. ). removing the clam and placing him in a high concentration of phyto is not an efficient way to give the clam these nutrients and can actually clog the gills.

clams filter water 24/7 for respiration and can / will take what they need as needed, rejecting the rest. it's far better for the clam to have the nutrients available in the water to utilize as required than trying to give them a lot at one time.

if you want to supplement with phyto, go back to adding a little to the tank water on a regular basis.
