I keep reading about feeding coral directly.what types can you do this with and how do you do it?I have zoos, torch, frogspawn xenon, polyps

There are many ways to feed your coral. Using for instance Rod's food, reefchili, coral frenzy is a good source of food for about most coral. As always you should research the coral specifically to see the types of food it likes but we use reef chili which has a good mixture of :
Reef Chili contains all of the essential ingredients: Bio-engineered Zooplankton, Spray Sried Phytoplanton, Freeze Dried Rotifers, Freeze Dried Copepods, Dried Daphnia, Spirulina Powder and an Artemia Nauplii replacement diet. Each jar of Reef Chili includes directions and a measuring spoon.

One small jar will last you a while, and you can get a small feeding jar like:

We feed ours every couple of days after lights out, we mix the reef chili as per directions in the bottle, let it hydrate and then squirt it around the each coral

Most soft coral will get the nutrition they need naturally in the water. If you're just asking about feeding in general, I use Coral Frenzy.

Most polyps don't need to be feed (zoe's, xenia, star, clove, daisy) since they either absorb their nutrients straight from the water or via photosynthetic reaction. SPS corals can be feed very small food (zooplankton, phytoplankton, rotifers, copepods, etc). LPS corals can be feed larger meaty foods depending on the size of the coral. Feeding in general will make the corals more healthy, but alot of the sps and lps corals also get a large portion of their nutrition via photosynthesis.

I normally use a turkey baster to squirt the food directionally where I want it. It also allows you to control how much each corals gets (too much can kill them, so the less is more method is best).

how do you overfeed? won't the corals just not take the excess?

cant overfeed the coral....just the tank...in the wild food is in nonstop abundance...however waste is removed equally fast...in our tanks...not so much...if you notice your water quality dropping, slow down on the food, otherwise...like i said you cant overfeed the coral or your fish...

The last post about overfeeding is the most important, if your system can't breakdown waste you water quality will go down the tubes and you won't have anything to feed.

By overfeeding, I was referring to feeding foods that are too large for the coral to handle. Newer reef keepers sometimes have problems with this, especially with LPS corals and anemones. If the food that you give them is too large for their mouth, then the food can get stuck and will eventually rot and take the coral out with it. Most of the time it's from people trying to feed silversides or other overly large chunks of fish to the larger corals. Just because the coral is big doesn't mean that its mouth is too.

To find out which corals perfer spot feeding just thaw some frozen brine and use a turkey baster to apply food to them , if they want it they will grab it. GL..
