Feeding corals pellet food

Holy blast from the past! I'd be tempted to send the whole colony to you if it wasn't actively dying out on me, every day it loses a bit more flesh and I can't figure out why :( It's a purple rim watermelon too, or was, now it looks like a frosted turd.

Things are good out here, I hope the move's treating you well! Get a tank going yet?

Sending PM so as we don't derail the thread... ;)

instead of pellets I have used raw shrimp a couple times. i let one thaw, but it into really miniscule pieces. Put it directly on the coral and voila, it's gone. You can get a big bag of uncooked shrimp and it would last forever.

I believe a lot of corals can pull nutrients from detrius and other waste products. It's probably true that blasting the rocks during cleaning gives them some food, as well as general particulates floating around the tank.

However, I am a noob and haven't seen a lot of coral growth yet. That's just my early observation.

ive done it with spectrum

definitely be careful not to overfeed. i overfed my duncan the first time, it puked them all up, i thought i had killed it lol

growth on my LPS that ate the pellets was off the freakin charts!! i stopped with the pellets and growth slowed significantly.

Did you grind them up?

Years ago I turkey basted my Duncans with PE mysis and their growth was exponential. Had to back off on that idea as the colony was out of control. Their growth slowed but the colony did fine and continues to do so today, 3 years later. This evening I fed a new Elegance a small piece of raw shrimp with a long pair of over sized tweezers (commonly used for feeding reptiles). It took the piece about as fast as my RBTA and devoured it in 10 minutes. 20 minutes later the Elegance is back open. Selective, careful feeding will yield results but I can't say I would go with random broadcast methods with the exception of cyclopeeze.

Nope, just turn off the flow and drop the pellets onto the coral, then wait until they're done eating and turn it back on again. Grinding them up into the tank is just going to foul up your water quality, but either way keep in mind you don't need to feed corals at all.

I would generally agree as I too subscribe to the "poop is good, poop is wise" philosophy, however I do have a apple Scoly that requires target feeding. So once a week or so I just target feed all my corals. It can't hurt and the fish eat the excess.

I'm sure I have fed mine pellets before, but in general don't really feed my coral. I currently have a wooden canopy that I have to completely take off to work in the tank so I don't get in there often. I would probably encourage new hobbyists to not do it to discourage water quality issues.

Nothing more prehistoric than watching a fungia feed. I've used pellets in the past less fuss but, I used scallop that I froze. I would freeze it then shave off a piece chop it fine and feed the entire tank a great starter food for new fish also. The point made for newbies and water quality can't be stressed enough. Never feed more than what can be consumed before it hits the floor of the tank.
