Feeding DT's...Question please

Even if DT's smells like rotten eggs, is it too bad for my baby maxima?? Ordering it online will take too long as my LFS is getting a new shipment in three days from now. The stuff on their shelf smells like rotten eggs. Do I wait or feed it to him anyway?? Is there something other than DT's I could look for?? In order to avoid this predicament, I am going to grow my own phyto, as well as rotifers and brine shrimp. I ordered the phyto kit form Florida Aqua Farms two days ago.

Hey. DT's should not have a bad odor, rather a slight sweet odor.

The stuff on their shelf smells like rotten eggs

Are their DT's on actual store shelves, or shelves in a refridgerator? DT's must be kept in the refridgerator, and periodically shaken.

I would not risk it by feeding it to your clams.

I meant the stuff in the refrigerator. Sorry! They don't shake it and looked at me oddly when I suggested that they do. She said they will order some more and try to shake it at least once a day. I know as well as you do that when they have cats, dogs, birds and snakes to attend to, phytoplankton is the least of their worries. I should have ordered it from PA when I had the chance. If this little guy doesn't make it, it is my fault for not being well prepared. I trusted that the LFS had good stuff.

I didn't think I should use it either. But I feel bad because I haven't got anything else for him until the shipment comes in on Tuesday. I already checked, none of my friends have the stuff. Anything else I can feed him??

The bottle clearly says to shake at least once a week :) Apparently they don't know too much about some of their products. I don't think there is much else you can feed until the next order comes in, but there are other brands of live phyto besides DT's. Whether it is available in your area or not, I don't know.

I think your clam will be fine without a feeding until then. I too have a baby maxima (one inch approximately), and it has had to go at least a week and a half without feedings ,and is doing just fine.

Thanks for you help. I am delving into clams and am becoming obsessed, similar to my SPS.

BTW, your cleavage is showing in your avatar.

yep when DTs smells like rotten eggs you are smelling dead phytoplankton that is in the process of decomposition.....Your clams will be ok untill you get some freash stuff....someday ill grow my own phyto as well....
