Feeding Fish Roe

I have become a believer in feeding fish roe. I feed my anthias capelin fish roe (black and red). I also have salmon eggs but these seem to large for their mouths. Does anyone else feed either of these? If so, how often? Thanks!!

Nice! I think its a great food for our fish!

Why do you think butterflyfish and triggers and other fish swarm damsel nests in the wild? And when pelagic fish spawn in our tanks many fish learn to time this and gobble the eggs up!

+1!
I am experimenting with flying fish roe (the stuff used for sushi) from my local Asian market. I mix it with other fresh seafood, and use flavorless gelatin as a binding agent. My fish love it!

I feed prawn roe at least once daily. It is eaten with gusto by all my fish including my dragonface and banded pipes and my Oxymonacanthus longirostris pair. I fear than if I ever ran out for a significant period, I could loose those fish. I would like to try some other kinds of eggs but haven't been able to find any.

Look for capelin roe (black or red) which has no additives. Good size for the fish you are feeding.

prawn roe, fresh out the guts from a local Asian store.

Steve, to clarify, capelin roe available to consumers DOES have additives. They are seasoned and dyed. Purchasing raw capelin eggs in small quantities is extremely difficult, if not impossible. The best I have been able to do is frozen female capelin at an Asian food store. Just gotta gut them and rinse the eggs off yourself.

These cost $1.99 and would have about 100mL of eggs.

always wondered if my fish would the eggs from the perch I catch her from the great lakes and lake simco. Lake simcoe perch are well fed on mysis. should be good eating for the fish.

Unprocessed fish roe IS difficult to obtain. I now have two sources, one for capelin fish roe and the other for walleye fish roe. It seems that everyone wants to add soy sauce to it. I guess it tastes good that way although I have not personnally tried it. But my fish and LPS corals love it.

All right, you gotta dish. I have tried every single connection I know of, dropped my affiliation to fish mongers everywhere and nobody can help me out...where do you get them?

My local asian market only carries pollock roe in raw and fresh frozen. Everything else has additives even though they tell me it does not. Had to have a customer interpret the labels for me

Well, I put the arm on my local meat and fish store and they in turn asked their fish supplier. The result is walleye fish roe. Then I went to my LFS wholesaler and they were able to get capelin fish roe with no additives (except salt). But as a backup, I googled it. I found one supplier willing to provide 2 lbs but nothing smaller. Of course it would also mean FEDEX priority overnight. Still, all in all, I believe the HUFA content to be worth it. I couple that with blackworms, fresh clams, and mysis and I feel pretty good.

That is awesome. I think that would be well worth it if you use the roe within a year or so.

Just a warning 2 times I have lost fish after feeding perch roe. Not entirly sure why either. Though I believe it has to do with the amounts I fed causing a bacterial bloom and oxygen crash so just be carefull. Both times I started losing fish 4-5 hours after feeding with fish effected breathing hard and some dying others are just fine. Mostly triggers and tangs effected.
