I have multiple tanks. Virtually all of my fish go nuts for it, my LPS corals go berserk feeding on it. Using it in a year is easy even though I feed other things as well. But it did take some work to acquire sources, and online most but not all have additives.

Was there sucrose added to it? What you are describing sounds like you added a carbon source. I feed a half teaspoon full to a 350 gallon tank. No issues so far. But thanks for the warning.
 
No it was roe straight from fish I catch icefishing each year and clean myself. Very tasty for me however love perch fillets.
 
For those not intrepid enough to scour the fishmongers' wares, strip eggs from freshly ice-fished perch, etc., many LFS carry Nutramar Ova - prawn eggs. I mix them in from time to time, and I always make sure to have some held back to help entice a new addition to eat.

that is a large amount of eggs, but that is also a large tank....hummmmmm

you got me worried. I currently feed Rods foods fish eggs but I heard he doesn't sell it anymore. anyone know what type of fish eggs those are?


anyone had this experience with walleye eggs?
I can also get salmon eggs These are all straight from the sac.
 
THe other possibility is that perch have some sort of toxin that effects some fish more than others. I have never had problems with white bass eggs for instance.
By the way walleye are in the same family as perch

They're not listed on the website anymore as far as I can see. They *look* like tobiko or masago. From what I have heard they are dyed, but never used the product myself. Have you tried rinsing them in tap water? Do they change color to pale yellow?
 
One thing to consider for those who are feeding roe of fish they personally have caught -- are the fish truly wild fish or are they stocked fish that have been aquacultured and transfered to native waters? Many trout and game fish are stocked here in PA. I'm not sure if that could affect anything or not, but it may be something to consider.

As a side note, I have seen very selective fish, such as cleaner wrasses, eat fish roe. Most of my small fish love it.
 
Has anybody fed their fish mullet roe? Are the eggs easy to separate? Fish like them? When it's cured it is called "botarga"...looks like they are about 0.8-1.0mm in size.

Mullet is a bit less fatty than capelin, but I have no idea whether that carries over to the eggs.
 
Does anyone know the exact dye that is used in Masago? A simple thorough washing of the eggs should be more than enough to knock off any spices/sauces that are put onto the Roe, and a soaking can remove most of the dye.

With how fatty Roe is, I doubt it should be fed as a staple food. So, in the amounts that should be feed (IMO), the minimal dye remaining likely won't have any affect on the fish or tank.

The Rod's food fish eggs are bright orange, and they do loose a lot of that color if they sit in water for a little while. My fish respond better to the eggs when they are highly visible, though.
 
Same stuff in Rod's. Buying it without paying Rod is less expensive with the same result. I do rinse all of my food with no problems from the capelin roe.

I believe Rod's eggs are just Masago or one of the various Sushi eggs.

How do you thaw your capelin roe? Do you cut it up pre-thaw or do you let it thaw completely and then rinse? The eggs seem to clump instead of coming apart individually for me. Maybe I need to thaw it longer..
 
I also feed my fish and corals Fish Roe and they LOVE it! Especially the LPS, they start to grow like crazy if you feed them daily with Fish Roe.

I keep mine in 2 oz bottles in the freezer. When ready to feed, I either: thaw mysis and rinse it, then add fish roe to the mix OR just take a half teaspoon and swish it in the tank. The swish disburses it nicely. I see the butterfly fish search for it on the sand but other fish eat it out of the water column.
