I just got the seahorses yesterday and tried feeding them some mysis today. They won't really persue it when i squirted some infront of them and i made a feeding bowl but the mysis floats so it just floats out of it. what should I do?

i turned off the pumps and the food did finally sink so i left it in the bowl but they didn't go near it

Make sure you are feeding the same brand mysis they were eating before you received them. It's "normal" for them to be a bit stressed out and not eat for a day...or two at the most.

As far as the food floating out of the feeding dish - thaw the mysis is saltwater first, not freshwater. If the mysis still floats out of the dish, the current in the tank is too strong so move the feeding dish to a calmer part of the tank.

I'm not sure what brand they were fed but i just asked. I just got them yesterday though but i don't want them to starve since they need to eat alot per day.
I got the food to stay in the bowl by turning off the pumps but they don't go near it. It's a clear plastic bowl thats about 2" tall. I cut the end of a plastic bottle off and melted the top so it wouldn't be jagged. but they don't really go near it

I was going too but there backordered for awhile so i got them from Beth at Seahorse Corral. I think she might feed Hikari too

i dunno what Beth uses, but most breeders and keepers feed either Hikari or PE. the reason being is those two brands tend to be whole shrimp rather than pieces.

also, PE is a freshwater species and is larger in size, while Hikari is a SW species.

PE has like 8 times more protein and fat then any other mysis. I might get some of that too.. but each horse did eat a few shrimp last night

tagging along-any other tricks to keeping the food in a dish? The mysis I use just floats away.

Tom's advice (thawing/soaking in SW) is about the best you can do. if the stuff still floats away, you either haven't soaked it long enuff, or the flow is too strong.

i recommend using a "feeding tube", which is nothing more than a length of clear rigid tubing (used for UG filters), place one end in the feeding station, then pour in the mysis and let it sink down and settle into the dish.

i do this every PM in our barb tank and 3x a week to feed one of our stingfish...it always works.

The fat and protein content do not differ much between PE and Hikari. PE lists their nutritional data in dry weight % while Hikari lists their nutritional info in wet weight %
