feeding Pipefish

I have 2 pipefish in my refugi.

1x Doryrhamphus pessuliferus ,

1x Doryrhamphus janssi ,

I bought both 1 week ago.

Both Doryrhamphus janssi and Doryrhamphus pessuliferus eat freshly hatched Brine shrimp.

Doryrhamphus pessuliferus eat small mysis in refugi.

Doryrhamphus janssi eat live artemia (size 5-7mm), but Doryrhamphus pessuliferus do no eat such big live artemia.

I try with frozen artemia and frozen Red plankton , but until this moment both pipefish have not eaten frozen food.

I dose quite a lot freshly hatched Brine shrimp in in the refugi, so because pipefish eat only up to one every 2 seconds (I suppose this is normal), there are artemia all the time in the refugi (pipefish can not eat all). I found that pipefish ate with frequency 1 freshly hatched Brine shrimp every to second when I dose freshly hatched Brine shrimp, but now eat only 1 freshly hatched Brine shrimp every 10 or 20 second. I suppose that is not very hungry any more.

Do you think, that is good idea to dose phytoplancton in the refugi as food for not eaten artemia.

I also have a Janns' Pipefish. I do not feed him anything at all. He's in my 75 gallon mixed reef display tank with a lot of other fish. He eats pods in the LR and those that make it from the fuge to the display.

I've had him for 7 months and recently he started eating frozen cyclopeeze. Prior to this he was self sustaining with regards to food.

I agree with "masterswimmer" , my Janss eats pods and frozen cyclopeeze...

That's the one. Just make sure you use the frozen.

I've never used it. I know MANY reefers that use the frozen with great success. Freeze dried, IMO, seems like they have to remove moisture and possibly other ingredients in order to freeze dry it. I see no reason to mess with success. The frozen has worked, so that's what I use.

I don't know about for fish, but I had a can of the freeze-dried stored under my tank, actually forgot about it....today was taking that tank down to put up a bigger one (of course!) and found the can empty....the top was off the can and had punctures in it -- my cats ate the cyclop-eeze!! Didn't seem to do them any harm as I didn't know until I found the empty can, it did smell fishy which is why they ate it LOL

I found the freeze-dried just floated on the top when I used it and it clumped.....I like the frozen much better, as do the fish it seems

What is the size of the frozen Cyclops-eze ?

I found frozen Cyclops in local store, but I am not sure that is the same type of food.

Those frozen Cyclops are quite small 1-2mm.

In addition to the cyclopeeze, try Hikari brand mysis. My janss is a fiend for it, and it doesn't take long for them to figure out they can eat it. It may look to big, but my multibands and my janss eat it with great enthusiasm.

What is the size of the Hikari brand mysis ?

Different batches are different sizes, but I'd say most are around 1/4".

Hikari is definitely much smaller sizes than PE (Piscine Energy) brand.

I feed my pipefish with frozen Cyclops today.

Doryrhamphus janssi ate it, but looks like that Doryrhamphus pessuliferus do not like frozen Cyclops.

I'd keep feeding it. I can only tell you that my Janns' eats it. Now yours does too. That's awesome news. I wouldn't be surprised if your pessul's start eating it sometime in the future. It took about 6 months for my Janns' to take it.
