I used to feed my puffer feeder goldfish. Usually lasted about 2-3 minutes until the puffer found them hiding. Other than that, it was usually CHOMP around the 20 second mark.
Horrible food for a puffer! You should not be feeding FW fish to a SW fish. I mean, when is your lionfish (or a puffer) ever going to come across a GF?
Protein is protein... I feed all my fish- live black worms and every species eats them including the rainfordi goby, purple tang, damsel, clowns, six line and purple eyed yellow tang. I gurantee they never ran across them in the ocean.
Goldfish do not have the nutritional value saltwater fish need, because they come from FRESHWATER. Also their scales are larger that most saltwater fish's scales and can cause blockage problems.
This is no different than feeding processed white bread to pigeons. The people who feed it to the pigeons say that processed white bread is made from wheat which is a grain, and pigeons eat grain so processed white bread must be good for pigeons. The problem is that the white bread is processed and this removes most of the nutritional value and fiber found in the grain. Goldfish are freshwater fish and do not eat or produce the amino acids and other building blocks that saltwater fish need to survive long term.
i disagree that the saltwater fish don't have the right amino acids. the digestive system gets the amino acids from broken down proteins, whatever proteins they are. i'm sure your fish will be fine. feed your guppies really well before you give them to your lion fish. something like formula one flakes. feed them till they get a really nice round belly.
i ordered some saltwater feeder shrimp one time and there was a small guppy in there that was acclimated to the salt water pretty well. i figured what the heck and threw him in the tank. one of my clown fish grabbed him by the head and the other one grabbed him by the tail. all i got to say is that ill never do that again, i used to own guppies and liked them a lot.
an occaisional goldfish or 2 will not cause any problems, but Freshwater fish as a sole diet for saltwater animals will likely result in liver damage according to the study by Dr Rob Toonen back in the 90s
Get a clear acrylic feeding stick and some silversides....most striking Lions will eat if it "looks" like the food is alive. I have gotten some pretty stubborn fish to begin eating that way. Good luck...
