what do you guys feed your sun corals? i have one head that is big enough for mysis shrimp but the others are smaller than a eraser tip on a pencil.

You'd be surprised. Even the small heads can probably put down a mysis. You can always just chop them up a little. Personally, i feed mine a mix i make. I get a few ounces of shrimp, clam, mussels, scallops and squidd. I chop it very fine and add some frozen cyclopeeze and feed a small piece every few days. Works great and pretty cheap.

Yep, Publix. It only costs like $5-7 at most and lasts for at least a few months even if you feed every other day.

sweet!! i'll need to look into that. would a bta eat that as well
My BTAs seem to do better when fish is added to the diet as well, lancefish especially.

I cut the silversides into smaller chunks with scissors, say 1cmx1cm. Especially important for specimens less then 6" across or newly arrived.

Otherwise they spit out large pieces over night which drop into the rock work and rot :(

With what sufunk said, my smaller heads tend to be out more often since they are always hungry and even though it may take a half hour they will eat whole mysis.

thanks everyone.

traveller7, my bta is maybe only 2" across he's tiny. would it be able to take chunks that small or would i need to go smaller?

For a BTA that size, I would go smaller.

That is quite small for BTA, in fact it is within the Majano range. Might want to post a picture or two in the Anemone forum to confirm an ID.

I have a few tiny splits that size now, but they are created when a much larger specimen get sucked through my overflows

thats the size of its foot. i couldnt tell you the size of its top because it has never been fully open. its not in the greatest health. i got him from a friend that was neglecting(sp) his tank.

now that i just looked it up i think i do have a majano. its top is about the size of a dime. its only one and in the same tank as my bta. how bad are they? i just took down my 29g because i could get aiptasia under controll. is it going to be like that?

They can be quite a pain and in many cases become prolific. If there is a doubt on the ID, you can try to isolate it; if it does not begin to grow without further divisions, odds are certain you have majano.

If it is majano, hit it with some kalk paste or Joes Juice.

Good luck.

You shouldn't have any problem feeding your anemone the homemade mix i use. I feed it to my carpet and sebae whenever i feed the sun and they both love it. I feed them shrimp mainly but supplement that with a little of my mix whenever i feed the sun and it has been working for about 2 years.

No, ime. I can never find it but Eric Borneman did a study saying that every head didnt need to be fed, if you search on here you can find it. My sun has way too many heads to try and feed each. I just feed a bunch but never worry that every head get some. Almost 2 years later, it has grown many new heads and is doing great.

I got a couple of polyps of sun coral from my LFS yesterday. Since I have T5s blasting most of my display I put them in my refigium where the lights are much lower. This AM I saw that the cups were fatter than last night but saw no polyp extension. Do sun corals extend their polyps regularly or only during feeding? Help apprecitated

Usually only at night but you can train them to open up whenever. Mine will open any time i put food in the tank now pretty much. Keep trying to get them to feed. I started using frozen cylopeeze soaked in selcon and then moved on to my homemads mix.

If you spray a little cyclopeeze on them it should get them starting to open. A few minutes later spray a little more and hopefully they should open even more. Keep doing this until they open all the way or stop opening more. If they stop opening further, stop and try again the next day.

BTW, i dont think having them under your t5's will matter. I have mine directly under pcs and i know at least 3 other people who have them directly under mh's with no problems. They dont need light but ime it wont hurt them either.
