Feeding video and pictures

Here's a couple pictures and video of what I like to call my growout tank. It's obviously too small for these fish long term, but right now they all seem to get along without any serious aggression. Yes, there is some chasing going on but as you can see, there are no nipped fins, no body damage, no nothing as far as physical damage goes.

I've always thought that one major reason fish show aggression is food, whether they want food right then or are trying to get any competition for food to either die or at least leave the area. So, to combat that I feed a LOT. In the video, I drop in some small pellets, then some larger ones, then some medium size and then some flakes. I feed this much at least 4 times a day, sometimes 5. I also add a half sheet of nori per day. I see almost no aggression between the fish except some chasing, but no physical contact, and I attribute this to LOTS of feeding.

I'm not saying this is the best way to do things, but I plan on a bigger tank in the future and for now these guys do great in a smaller tank. With that said... here's the video and pictures to go along with it.

I've always thought the lieutenant tang was a gorgeous fish and I finally own one. I really like it.

i'm at work and not able to watch videos here.

ever had any bouts of ich with the PBT? how did you QT it? how long have you had it?

do you think a PBT would work with a powder brown? i have a ~4" powder brown that will be the 1st occupant of my tank. hes in hypo QT right now.

What is that little tang? He's not shy at feeding time for just a baby.
That's a baby clown tang, and no, he is not shy. I wanted all the fish to be around that size, I ordered them all between 1" and 2" but they didnt all come in that small.

I did not QT these fish. Instead, I acclimated them all to my tank then did hypo for a couple months, as I dont have any inverts to worry about. I havent seen a spot of ich on any fish and hope it stays that way.

I wouldnt think a PBT and powder brown would be good together. Not at all, they are too similar in shape and color and behavior. It's not a match up I'd be willing to try unless I had a LARGE tank, like 200+ gallons.

im a fan of tenneti tangs as well. its on the possible list as they are a bit $$ for a fish here.

They are great fish, I really like them. He's unfortunately too big already. He came in as the biggest of the tangs I ordered and in a couple months I can already see that he has grown. Definitely a fast grower. I'll either have to pass him on or get my tank upgrade done.

Great looking fish. I love PBTs, clown tangs, queen trigs....their colors are the best. Like the queen trigs, the dark lines on their face are outlined in yellow if you get close enough to see it....just awesome markings.

Yep, it's crazy. It's too bad how the most beautiful fish are the ones that get aggressive. I'm somewhat hoping that these fish might grow up together and at least tolerate each other, but doubtful, fish just dont seem to be wired like that, there's no such thing as a friend or a companion in the fish world when you're talking about tangs. Failing that, I'm hoping being moved to larger and larger tanks will keep them happy. Feeding a lot seems to really help keep aggression down. I've stepped up my nori feeding to once a day, which gives them something to chew on for quite a while and keeps them occupied.

Live Aquaria had a sale on them. I bought two actually, was prepping one for a friend but it didnt even survive the QT. The bad thing is I ordered all my fish in the 2.5" or under range, which you almost never see powder blues offered at that size, but most came in at 3" and are quickly growing, so I've got to step up my tank upgrade plans a lot sooner than I had planned on.

I had a lieutenant tang in my 180g but only for a little while. Incredibly beautiful fish, very active and great personality. The problem is he could never find a spot in my tank where he felt safe and out of sight. I have a peninsula tank. So he kept digging up the sand causing constant sandstorms as I have very fine sand. I caught him easily and sold him to a fellow reefer who also had a 180 but he had lots of great hiding places. He did not dig the sand once in this guy's tank. Great fish. Yours look very healthy! You always got to love the yellow tangs too -- the color is always so striking. Mine got speared by I think my Chevron tang because they all got wound up when I was cleaning the glass. It healed pretty quickly but was quite the puncture wound. He was nose up for a few hours because I think it hurt quite a bit!

great pics...

what camera are you using to shoot the pics/videos?
A Canon 5D mkII. The video in this post was with a 50mm lens, I have another video on my YouTube account that is a lot more zoomed in, that was shot with a 100mm macro lens.

The lieutenant tang is a great fish, I really like it. I've wanted one for quite a while, but my old 210 had a large dussumieri in it that I know wouldn't have allowed a new tang to be added. I'm trying to start small with some new tangs to move up to a larger tank but I can tell the lieutenant tang is already growing fast, arg :) That's interesting your tang wanted hiding spots and dug in the sand, mine never has done that and I dont have a lot of hiding spots either. Hiding spots makes the fish territorial, imo.

Nice pix!

Renee shoots with a 5D Mk II as well. She's been a Canon fan for as long as I've known her. Her two fave lenses are the 50 mm and the 100 macro as well, altho she's starting to look at "L" glass now...cha-ching.

I've owned a couple L lenses. My current favorite is my 100-400mm L, it's great. I mean GREAT. I really like that. I also owned the 24-70L f/2.8 which was fine, but I actually prefer the 50mm f/1.4 to that lens, especially for fish tank work. And it's about $1000 cheaper so it's really hard to justify the L lens there. I sold my L, bought the 50mm and had about $900 left over to buy other stuff with. Cant complain :)

I've used the Canon 100mm L macro lens, I dont see it being that great as compared to the regular 100mm macro, I'll stick with it.

I really liked going from my 50D to my 5D mkII, that was a crazy upgrade and very much appreciated :)
