Feeding

Was wondering if anyone has used auto-feeders? I would like my fish to behave naturally when people are close to the tank. As of now they follow you up and down the glass like hungry puppy dogs. They've come to know humans as a meal, and it kinda bothers me. I can think of a few issues an auto-feeder may pose, and am open to any other suggestions. I would use the feeder for pellets (formula one and two) and feed the frozen myself. I think if they were fed at times I weren't around as well as when I am they may not associate human to food. Thanks.

Also if anyone has had luck with an auto feeder, are some better than others?

I have two Eheim and they are great.

I think your fish are going to do their food dance every time you are around regardless of the auto feeder. It is instinct for them to eat as much as possible and they learn food sources quickly.

Pretend they really like you and be glad that the opposite isn't happening (them hiding any time someone comes near the tank).

I have heard nothing but good things about Eheim auto feeders. If I had to get one, that's what I'd go with.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. One last question I just thought of. Does loading the feeder up cause the pellets to go bad? I'm not sure how important this is. But I know the bottle says to keep them sealed tightly and they're good for a few months after opening the pouch.

I would just load it about 25% and replenish as necessary. The Eheim 3581 has a ventilator to keep it from clogging. I don't know if that will help keep the food fresher or make it go stale faster. If the fish are hungry, the probably won't care as they will quickly learn that one of their tankmates will be glad to eat it all if they get picky.

I agree with all of this, I love my Eheim. I've never had problems with the pellets going bad.

Ha ha, they can tell who is standing in front of the tank too. I get a much different reaction than my wife.
