I came home today to find my female cardinal dead and stuck to my vortec pump. I was really bummed. I got them from a fellow reefer about 6 months ago and they were a known pair. About 2 weeks in my tank they bred and the male kept the eggs for about 3-4 weeks. I was away for Thanksgiving when he let them go, but wasn't planning on keeping them for that first time.
Anyways, I fed the fish tonite and the remaining cardinal didn't want anything to do with the food even though it was his favorite. Also his jaw line has expanded dramatically from yesterday. I didn't notice them getting ready to mate last night, but I guess they did.
Couple of question. Is it common for a female to die after mating? Could she have been worn out from it and gotten sucked into the vortec? They usually stay far away from it?
Also, I really want to keep these fish, especially since the female died. Should I set up a separate tank now and put the male in it? He's gonna be hard to catch but I figure it is better to do it earlier than later.
I wasn't prepared for this. Does anyone have a link to get me started on how to breed them?
