Give rowaphos a try, its not the cheapest but you use far less than regular gfo so in the end it's cheaper.

You can regenerate gfo. I've been far too lazy/busy to do it but it's a proven process. One of the good magazines had a article on it. Advanced aquarist iirc.

You're welcome. You'll lose some volume when doing that process, so if you do it I wouldn't use anything with a really small grain size.
