Few new pieces

I got some new pieces over the weekend. Can't wait to see how they do under new LED lights. I'm anxious and excited. Lol.
Rudolph would be happy to know that my girlfriend call sps the same thing as he does. "Sticks" lol. I got a Blue Milli and a ORA Blue Voodoo. Getting a couple more pieces this weekend too. Glad to be "back in the hobby" even though I never really "left" just didn't care to much at one point. Now I'm back in it and wanting to upgrade my tank now. Thinking I'm about to start putting so much back each paycheck and saving up.

I got the 2 this weekend from Kermit's reef. I STAY at Memfish, would have to say it's my favorite, and te most informational. They have helped me tremendously! The pieces I'm getting this weekend are from a guy my brother knows in Ar. Thinking about ordering something online from somewhere if shipping doesn't kill me. Lol. Are you looking for something in particular?

"LMAO @ the stick" I swaer when she said that I thought REALLY!! lol.. Come on over anytime. I'm usually here. Hoping it grows somewhat quickly. Ohhh btw after I left ur house earlier and put Grapes Of Wrath in I found that lil piece of birdsnest u gave me. Good thing I have good eyes. I have that "stick" glued down pretty close to top of water. It's getting pretty good light for sure.

Sounds like you have a very insightful girlfriend. Actually they start out as "twigs" and two years later (if they are still alive) they are very small sticks.

I think SPS grows just as fast as any other coral, with the exception of gsp, Kenya, Xenia... My SPS grows as fast as any chalice, zoas, acans, hammer, Duncan's, etc. if you start with a small twig and two years later still have a small stick, you're doing something wrong. Lighting, water quality, etc. I'd like to see someone post pictures of their non-SPS growth. No one ever posts growth pictures. I posted a few a couple days ago, and my SPS grew pretty well for a couple of months, I think in 2 years they will be big colonies. I had a Red Planet for example last year, that I got when it was only 1" tall. In about a year or year and a half, it was probably 10" tall by 12" wide. I think there's a misconception about slow growth of SPS.

Here's a couple of pictures:

I used to HATE sps. I guess bc I failed at keeping them alive. Oh well. I'm not gonna give up bc they are AWESOME pieces once they grow out more and become full-size colonies! I will be keeping updated pics and things with corals from now on. Can't upload them from phone though as far as I know. I'll have to add to comp then add to here.

Jay, I started out with 20% intensity with light, how long do I need to leave it set on that before I go up a lil bit? And how much should I go up when I do raise the intensity?

I agree, with the right lighting, water circulation and chemistry and perhaps supplemental feeding (and even that's not always necessary), SPS can grow quite quickly. And SPS don't give off anywhere near the toxins that those damn softies do (yuk!) , or have the 6 inch stingers that are found in so many LPS (ouch!).

I am sure Jay P's point is correct on growth. But Jay has excemplorary husbandry habits and is willing to invest in the required time and all the right equipment to make it happen. If you do and follow what Jay is doing, I have no doubt you will have great success.

I know Jay and others are well on their way and others have had mature SPS tanks in the past, but who (hobbiest) in our club currently has a mature SPS tank? I would chat with whomever speaks up as well.

Saltwaterlover, I appreciate your enthusiasm to re-take on SPS and LED's at the same time and I look forward to being SPS inspired soon!

Well Rudolph I'm gonna give it a whirl at least. I don't have any problems at all with LPS growing at all. I will probably always have a mixed reef. I like a mixture of things. Lol.
I'm hoping Jay will b able to give me some pointers as to what all I could do to help growth. I know I have enough light, it's the same light he has. I know I have enough flow, guess I'm just gonna continue to go with the flow and see how things turn out

I will be your biggest fan and hope it all works out.

Jay P also has many other things he probably does that also gets him there including calcium reactors, GFO, carbon, RIO/DI water equipment, best salt mix, live feeding, other additives, religious water testing, accurate testing equipment, charts everything for trends, etc. etc. so it may take more than just light and water movement to be successful in the long run. I think you can get away without some of these things in the LPS world, but may not be successful in the long run with SPS.

I am sure you know that many SPSers are having issues with LED's so if it where me, I would not take all the money from your engagement ring fund for that smart girlfriend, and would go slow on stocking your SPS frags until you have the lighting right.

And if it doesn't work out, I am sure "President" Jay can find some positive things to say about softies and LPS since an SPS tank is not a requirement to be successful and enjoy this hobby....

Vivid Corals has some good looking stuff, I would order from them, or WWC, of Live Aquaria DD, Battle Corals, Happy Coral, all have great looking, an quite a bit of rare, corals.

Actually, I don't use carbon, I don't use GFO, I don't use live foods, and I can't remember the last time I tested water for anything other than phosphates in the last couple of months. I rarely test at all, and go by how the tank looks. I don't chart anything (I did lighting for a month or so when I made first adjustments, but haven't written anything down since) and I don't use any additives at all other than amino acid. I buy the same saltmix everyone else does from Memfish. You make it out to be way more complicated than it is. My system is very simple and basic, I have a Ca reactor (same as dosing A/B), biopellets (same as using a fuge) and a skimmer. Nothing extravagant. I do regular water changes, it's not that hard.

Yall dont forget Harry has some great SPS frags and he is local and cheap.

All I know about SPS is if you start labeling your pictures with your screen name then you are a true sps nerd!!!!!!!!!

Look at the little big nest frag top center.

H@rry is actually in Alabama but will make some great deals. He sometimes has free shipping on orders over a certain amount. I have bought from Harry a few times and was always happy with my purchases.
