figuring out flow

This is my tank and the equipment I have to work with for creating flow. I would like everyone's opinions on where everything should be placed in the tank. TIA

If you must use powerheads....

Put them on the side walls, near the top, facing the center of the tank. The intersecting paths will create random flow in the tank.

Having said that, I think closed loops are a much better way of creating flow in your tank and are much more aesthetically pleasing. Just my 2 cents.

i would place the seaswirl on the right back corner so that the flow goes across the tank and into the overflow to your sump. and go w/ how wombat described for the mj's . i would skip on the hydor flows. the gears in the hydor's will wear out on you in a couple months and stop spinning.

See the arrow under where it says "55 AGA"? I meant put the MJ on that pane (the side wall), facing the same direction as the arrow. What you have there will work, but you're going to be aiming the flow at the front glass, not the corals.

Didn't you say you had two? One MJ 1200 and your return are not nearly enough flow for a 55 g tank. IMHO.

Yeah but where should I put the other MJ 1200? I'll be upgrading my return pump soon anyways. Any recommendations? The pump has to be 800 GPH or less afer 4' of head pressure.

but won't the sea swirl hit it or have all the water blowing on the MJ when it points at the corner. What are some good return pump brands?

Return pump, Sequence.

As for flow I would do as Matt suggested and have the two MJ at oppostie ends. I would place the seaswirl into the middle back of the tank so it helps randomize flow across the MJ streams. Something like this;

Marc, thats exactly what I was planning to do but I can't have the seaswirl in the exact middle because of the center brace. I was thinking that I sould have it right/middle because the overflow is on the left. Do you think that would be best?

Exactly.

Can the overflow be moved?

That should be fine. You'll have to tweak the flow some to get it just where you want it, but the more random the better.

Also, on my two Seaswirls I pulled the 90degree elbow off and went with a lockline connection to a flair tip. I can angle this down into the tank rather than having all the flow right in the top 3" or so. If you don't have it at YR you can probably have it ordered from your supplier...or head to Rocklin. The CRS may have some as well, since it's right by your hosue.

depends where. Where do you think it would be best and where would everything else be placed if I moved it to the location you were thinking about?

Or maybe use a 45 degree elbow? I believe O street carries a limited selection of loc-line too. If not, www.modularhose.com

I would stick the overflow right in the center. Then the SS just to the left or the right of it. I don't really think the exact placement matters all that much though.

The overflow can't go in the center because of the center brace. I think I'll get a "Y" fitting for the sea swirl have the bottom output with a flare pointing down and leave the top output be for surface aggitation. I'll have the MJs at oppisite ends, the overflow on the left, and the seaswirl center/right. Sound good? Also sequence pumps are WAY too heavy flow. Its a mixed reef and I only have a few of my favorite sps and the rest of the corals are softies/lps/zoas/clams. I'm looking for a submersible pump around 800-900 GPH.
