Fiji needed!

I am setting up a new 29g tank and I need Fiji! It seems many of the stores in the area aren't stocking much Fiji these days. Anyone have extra or want to split a box of Fiji Premium?

I miss the days when Reef and Pond stocked tons of purple Fiji.. now they have tons of Tonga.. which is nice but not what I want. Let me know if you all can help!

Did you check out Quality Aqua? I know they had some Fiji last weekend, cured and priced around $3.50 (?) per lb.

I just called Sherman and they are ordering more Fiji on Thurs, expect to have it in on Mon. Fiji 45-50# box is $139. Best price I've found locally and most likely what I'll do. LR on RC just goes to quick. Did you want to split a box? I need 75-100# for my 75. That would make a box and a half a realistic monitary goal for now.

45lbs in your 29g? I looked at the pics and they look great. Thats alot of rock though! Is your 130pc enough light? I have the same setup but I'm worried about the light levels being too low.

That is one of the problems with Fiji these days, it seems that the stuff coming in from Fiji is more dense than it used to be. The more dense the rock the more lbs you will need to fill the tank. IME, at least a couple of years ago, the rock Shermans used to get in was void of any coralline and most of the rock was small (softball size), again this is just my experience and it was a while ago.

sherman tank gets in walt smith rock from fiji, they cure it out of the water by misting it with water for a few days or weeks at least so i understand... so thats why the coralline is dead when you get it in but it comes back. i would be wary of thier rock though because they always have tons of wierd macros that spring up as you can see in thier own tanks.

"Is your 130pc enough light? I have the same setup but I'm worried about the light levels being too low."

The light level in my 29 is fine for LPS and softies. SPS is questionable. I figure it is still 4.5 wpg which is fine for most low to medium light level requirement items.

Did you see the post from ecreef today...he's selling off live rock (although he wants to sell about double what you'll need...)

I don't think I want to interact or support ecreef in anyway with all that is going on with him on RC. He is a total flake from my limited dealings with him. Good luck though.

What flakes!!!

What flakes!!!

So I call ahead to make sure the Fiji has arrived Monday. I talk to the one person whose opinion and advice I truly like and always appreciate today, Mon 3/27. The person tells me that the order some dude told me on the phone Tue 3/21 was going out on Thurs 3/23 to be in store Monday 3/27 has already been picked up by the person who I was talking to on the phone on Wed 3/22!!! So the LR has been sitting there for 6 days wrapped in, hopefully, damp newspaper in boxes on the floor by the time I called Monday. I was ****ed needless to say since I had called and made arrangements to get the LR the day it came in to hopefully have minimal die off. My guess is that after 6+ days with out water the die off would be substantial. Totally disappointed. I missed the Reef meeting Sun to prep for the LR pickup on Mon. Now, even though they still have boxes that I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t think I want, they tell me it will be weeks before another shipment. I've checked online and the best deals I saw were at www.liveaquaria.com. Boxes 40# of Fiji from $89-119, shipping $50. So about the same deal. They also had Caribbean for cheaper. I've never seen Carib so I hate to get something I've never seen from an online store.
Overall, Sherman has the best prices locally but their service sucks!
Any thoughts people?

I'm assuming that you know that all the live rock the stores get in is not cured and will need to be placed in a tub with some type of water circulating for at least 2 weeks. The same is true of mail order rock. You are much better off buying some from a reefer that is selling all his than buying from a store. That being said, Neptunes in Colorado Springs has live rock and they will tell you how long it has been in their tank. I guess what I'm saying is that you don't want to buy any rock that just arrived at the store.

Thanks Jon. I do have to ask why is everyone in this hobby so far up North?! :) Greeley!

I know that the LR will be uncured. I was hoping to get additional hitchhikers from the uncured rock though. I have time to let it cure. This is one hobby that the hobbiest should be in no hurry or rush. Unless you check your Nitrates and they are 60+ :) That is the other reason I missed the Sunday Reef Meeting. I was on my way out the door when I checked and decided to do an emergency water change which I finished at 3pm, a little to late to drive up to Broomfield for a 2pm meeting.

Guy bought my rock, ryan from this board... and thanks for the kind words trex, wish I never gave you that starfish for free.

ecreef - Only said when appropriate. How many times did you flake on me? How many times did you flake on the other people who have complained about you on RC and other forums? The fact is if you don't want people to make accurate assessments about your behavior that you don't like then treat people with the respect they deserve and that they have treated you with. PM me if you have anything else to say.

Peace,
Tom

In my experience, rock with tons of critters and 'hitchhikers' end up being way to uncured for starting up a tank. Quality rock has been power sprayed to remove unwanted sponges (those pesky sponges!!), and other macro algae's.

Lately all I've seen is Tonga tonga tonga or this Kaelini rock locally..
